Today we’d like to introduce you to Stu Nichols.
Hi Stu, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I wanted to get into the operation of an artist space and so I partnered with a well-known local developer who was forming an artist collaborative. We partnered successfully for five years. He was at a stage where he wanted to simplify his life and we bought out his interest. This is a very small part of my overall journey, but the rest of the experience did not relate necessarily to the art community. However, now that I’m in it, there’s a lot more to come!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Managing an artist collaborative has proven to be much ore difficult, and much more capital intensive, than I imagined. Some of this has to do with the reality that our artist-tenants are not always the easiest bunch to manage. The combination of being strong-willed and not terribly rule-oriented can be a challenging reality. But this particular investment is not so much about return on investment. It’s about return on community. We are making an impact in a material way on the artist community and feel very proud about that.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I spent my career as an attorney, a far from creative endeavor. Over the years, investing in a diverse array of real estate projects as a “side hustle” resulted my side hustle becoming my main pursuit. I’ve quit my day job and devote my time now to managing my investments.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Start early and don’t give up. You’ll try things that people will think is crazy, but do them anyway because even if you decide to go another direction, the lessons learned from dead ends are invaluable and those investments will compound.
