Daily Inspiration: Meet Tanika Barber

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tanika Barber

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Absolutely, I’d love to share my journey with you. It’s been a powerful path, marked by both personal transformation and professional growth.

I started in Buffalo, New York, working in the field of social work after earning my masters. But there came a point when I felt a call for something deeper—not only for myself but also in how I showed up for my clients. In 2017, I decided to take a bold step, leaving behind the familiar to move to Charlotte, North Carolina, where I could create space to focus on my own dreams and well-being. I realized that to truly help others, I needed to first create stillness and healing within myself.

Over the next few years, I dug deep, diving into various holistic practices like meditation, yoga, and reiki, and eventually becoming certified in mindfulness, sound healing, and yoga. These practices helped me reclaim my energy, and in 2020, I opened my group practice, MBS Therapeutics PLLC, to bring that transformative power to others. But I wanted my approach to feel expansive, inclusive of more than just traditional talk therapy. So I blended my clinical skills with holistic wellness, making space for clients to feel whole and at ease as they embrace every part of themselves.

From this journey, Let’s Heal Sis was born. As I worked with clients, I saw a powerful need for community—a place where women, especially Black women, could come together, support one another, and focus on self-love and growth. I envisioned a sisterhood rooted in healing and empowerment. That’s what Let’s Heal Sis has become: a community offering spaces where women can step away from their daily demands, recharge, and connect with others who understand their journey.

We host events like Sisterhood in Bloom, which creates meaningful moments through meditation, journaling, sound baths, and simple, honest conversations. We also host our annual Let’s Heal Sis Workshop for women looking for community; this year, the workshop will be held during Mental Health Awareness Month, March 2025, with the theme, Masks Off: Stepping Into Your InnerG. And for those seeking a more immersive experience, Let’s Heal Sis now offers international retreats. In May 2025, we’ll be gathering in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica, for a transformative retreat where women can connect more deeply with themselves and with each other, surrounded by the natural beauty of the rainforest and ocean.

Today, I’m known as The InnerG Healer—a name that reflects my mission to help clients connect with their own inner power and healing energy. Whether it’s through talk therapy, sound baths, or reiki sessions, my goal is to create an environment where everyone feels supported, uplifted, and inspired to honor their true selves. And now, I’m moving even more toward holistic wellness services for clients who are ready to journey beyond therapy, leaning into practices that promote lasting balance and self-love. It’s been a beautiful evolution, and I feel blessed to walk alongside each person who steps into this healing space.

I’m honored to walk this path with women who are ready to step into their full power. Through Let’s Heal Sis events, retreats, one-on-one therapy, and healing sessions, my mission is to build a movement of sisterhood and self-love that goes beyond any single event or session. It’s about creating a lifelong, collective journey of wellness and transformation—together.`

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all! This journey has been filled with its own challenges, twists, and unexpected turns. When I decided to leave everything familiar in Buffalo and start fresh in Charlotte, it was both exciting and terrifying. I was stepping into the unknown, not just geographically but also in terms of my purpose. That transition demanded a lot from me personally and professionally—I had to be vulnerable, face fears, and commit to healing myself before I could hold space for others.

Building a holistic practice came with its own struggles too. Traditional therapy is well-established, but combining it with holistic practices like reiki, sound healing, and meditation isn’t something everyone immediately understands or embraces. I had to carve out a place in the mental health world where these practices could be valued, and that took patience, perseverance, and a lot of educating others on the power of holistic wellness.

Growing Let’s Heal Sis also had its ups and downs. Creating a community that feels authentic, supportive, and safe is a big responsibility. I wanted each event and retreat to feel intentional and meaningful, and that meant dedicating time, energy, and resources to bring the vision to life. And like anyone building something from the ground up, I’ve had moments of doubt and financial hurdles, especially when expanding to things like our international retreats.

Through it all, though, each challenge has shaped me into the healer I am today. The struggles have taught me resilience, trust, and the importance of staying true to my vision. They’ve shown me that the path isn’t always smooth—but when you’re following your purpose, every bump and detour has a lesson to offer.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Thank you—I’d love to share more! My work centers around helping people connect to their inner peace, power, and purpose, and I’ve built several businesses to support this mission.

Through MBS Therapeutics PLLC, my group mental health practice, I provide clinical services to clients across North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. We offer traditional therapy with a holistic twist, incorporating practices like mindfulness, sound healing, and reiki to create a more integrated approach to mental health and healing.

Then there’s Let’s Heal Sis, a sisterhood built around healing and empowerment for women. We host both international and domestic retreats—like our upcoming retreat in Costa Rica in 2025—as well as community events that weave in wellness practices such as meditation, journaling, and sound baths. These gatherings are designed to help women recharge, connect, and grow within a supportive and culturally affirming space.

With The InnerG Healer, I expand this work into public speaking, wellness events, and corporate wellness sessions. I offer customized wellness experiences for families, private events, and businesses, bringing holistic healing into new environments. I also created, Beyond the Couch, my signature business coaching program, where I guide therapists who want to grow their own solo practices into thriving group practices or incorporate holistic methods like reiki and sound healing into their work.

What I’m most proud of is creating a movement that helps people feel seen, supported, and empowered on their journeys. Each of these businesses plays a role in that vision, providing different pathways for people to explore their own healing and embrace who they are. Whether it’s through therapy, community events, retreats, or business coaching, my work is about more than just “fixing” a problem—it’s about helping people tap into their own energy and learn to live in alignment with their true selves. That’s the mission that drives everything I do.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Absolutely! My journey has been filled with powerful moments of growth, and podcasts have played a huge role in that transformation. Faithfully listening to Slay Girl Slay and The Good News with Ashley Leggs has been a game-changer for me. Through Ashley’s words, I’ve found a renewed joy in my own life and gained clarity on my purpose. It was also through The Good News podcast that I connected with two incredibly inspirational women who were interviewed there, each sharing stories that resonate deeply with my own journey. I continue to be in connection with one of the young ladies as she has attending our Let’s Heal Sis Workshop last June and we actually met up to have lunch about 2 weeks ago. This is what Let’s Heal Sis is for, to connect and grow awareness through community and I thank Ms. Leggs for facilitating her podcast for me to connect with some of the women that she has interviewed!

I also make it a point to tune into the Life First Business podcast with Dr. TK. This past September, I had the honor of winning a scholarship to attend her VIP Mastermind Experience in Las Vegas. When I tell you, Dr. TK has been helping me get both my life and business all the way together—it’s no exaggeration! Her guidance has pushed me to level up, blending my personal growth with my professional goals.

These podcasts are more than just background noise for me—they’re sources of inspiration, motivation, and connection. Each episode feels like a reminder of what’s possible and encourages me to keep showing up as my best self, both in my personal life and in my work. They’ve truly been gifts in my journey, helping me build resilience, faith, and confidence in everything I’m creating.
