Daily Inspiration: Meet Trinity Smith

Today we’d like to introduce you to Trinity Smith.

Hi Trinity, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Some of my earliest and best childhood memories are of picking blueberries with my grandmother, who was an avid gardener. I think she was also the one who really introduced me to foraging – although I didn’t take an avid interest in it until much later in life – by showing me how to collect dandelion greens for her salads. After I became a mother, I took far more care with what I put in mine and my son’s body for both food and medicine, which led to me beginning to acquaint myself with the many edible and medicinal plants in my own yard. One day after making a batch of strawberry lavender jam, I got curious about what a jelly made from just lavender would taste like. It was delicious, so I made another out of rose petals to see what that would taste like. After that one turned out amazing too, I was off and running – I wanted to know what every edible flower tasted like! And so the idea for Foraging Flora LLC was born.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
So far, it has been a slow and steady road – I honestly feel like the biggest snag I’ve hit so far was right at the beginning, having to prove that the flowers were edible! Some were obvious, but others I had to present research and evidence for before I could move forward at all.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As my edible floral spreads have gained attention, I’m so proud of how much I’m able to bring a unique experience to people and inspire them to more closely consider the “weeds” growing in their own yards! I have continuously been invited to do more and more events by referral, such as the Raulston Blooms Festival on April 25th, and it’s so exciting!

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My grandmother and mother have both been huge supporters right from the beginning, as well as my son Owen, who always cheers me on and listens to me babble about what he calls my “plant obsession”. My best friend Ashley has also helped me as an assistant at a number of vendor events, and too many people to list who have given me free reign to forage on their properties, starting with my wonderful friend Diane!
