Today we’d like to introduce you to Wyatt Crabtree.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m a working musician, a one man band with the stage name Joe’s Cousin.
What started as a hobby has turned in to a full time profession.
I started playing open mics and farmers markets and now keep up a fairly extensive tour schedule playing over 100 shows a year in multiple states and markets.
I also currently host an open mic myself now called Salem Street Music Club that has turned in to one of my greatest joys and is something I am very proud of.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Ha!
Not at all. The music business is tough at the local level. It’s tough at all levels.
There are so many talented performers out there. Finding where I fit in to the music landscape was a challenge for sure.
Creating or branding my musical identity took years and is an ongoing process.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
What I do is perform original music and cover tunes to bring people joy. To make their day better. To make them remember something they love, or to just sit with them when they need a friend. That’s the power of music.
As a true one man band I’m different from most. I play guitar, drums, and sing at the same time. Full band sound with just one guy.
Ask any time what I’m most proud of and the answer will always be my family, but musically, currently I’m most proud of an
open mic I host in Apex NC on Tuesday nights called Salem Street Music Club.
This is a high talent open mic. It’s a showcase and some of the best local musicians I’ve ever heard come to play. It’s humbling as a working musician myself to hear how talented so many others are.
Our open mic is different. It’s a family and it includes not just musicians, but customers/regulars, and the bar staff. Everyone combined makes this the most special place to be on a Tuesday night.
I’m very proud of that.
