We’re looking forward to introducing you to Dan Irving. Check out our conversation below.
Dan, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is a normal day like for you right now?
By day I am a video and podcast editor – In my 9-5 I am typically working on Youtube videos about various topics such as local businesses, finance, and history. By night I am a musician, I am typically spending the night at a practice for one of the bands I am in, writing music for my main band, Pretty Crimes, and/or doing administrative work for Pretty Crimes.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Dan Irving, I’m a musician based in Raleigh, NC. I’m the frontman for the indie rock/pop band Pretty Crimes and I play keys and synths in a couple other acts. Pretty Crimes has been around since 2018, we are currently working on our third album and we are about to go back to playing live shows after a year off of writing and changing our membership. Our next show is at Neptunes Parlour in Raleigh, NC on Jan 30th, 2026.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
My parents are a big reason for my work ethic. They were both hardworking people and always encouraged me to fully apply myself to whatever opportunity came my way.
What’s something you changed your mind about after failing hard?
I wouldn’t call it failing hard, per se, but I did end up changing my mind about collaborating with others to make music. I used to be very protective of my art, thinking I had to do everything. But I’ve come to learn that my art is stronger when other people are involved.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
Supporting local artists is such an important aspect of maintaining community. We’re in a world that is shifting towards digital isolation, which is detrimental to mental health. In-person connections are more vital than ever, and I believe that supporting art goes a long way in cultivating in-person connection and a sense of belonging to one’s local community.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when working on new music. There’s a sense of adventure and excitement when I’m nailing down an arrangement with other people, when a new idea starts taking shape into something that feels bigger than any one person.
