Exploring Life & Business with Aurora Nkrumah Dixon of The Necessities Company

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aurora Nkrumah Dixon.

Hi Aurora, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
We launched The Necessities Company June 2019 with a goal of helping Black-owned businesses spread the word about their products. We attended our first event at Cuzzo’s Cuisine in Charlotte courtesy of BBOC. After events in NC, SC, Georgia, NY, Texas and being online for over 2 years, customer demand became high with requests to open a physical location. We did so on 6/5/2021. Our focus is natural products from laundry detergent to bamboo toilet paper.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road. When we launched the website in August 2019 it was 2 months later when we received our first sale. Although we weren’t focused on online sales because we were participating as vendors, it was difficult to not see any online sales. It’s definitely difficult getting the word out which our focus is doing so organically. Let the people tell the people. We appreciate every article and advertisement that has helped us get the word out.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The Necessities Company is The Home Of The Black Owned. We’ve partnered with over 65 Black-owned businesses to help you shop with ease and get the best of the best from Bamboo toilet paper to oral mouthwash. Our focus is everyday necessities. Products and foods that we use and eat every day. We offer delivery service in Charlotte, NC, in-store and online shopping. I’m most proud of how our Necessitarians help us get the word out about what we’re offering our community and beyond. We’ve been able to reach Necessitarians in Canada, Australia, Kenya, and Ghana. Our brand’s main focus is group economics which is the core of our funding of future schools, housing, hospitals, etc., and health. We are saying you can get the same and even better-quality products that you love that are natural from us and by us. This helps to circulate our dollars longer in our community and decrease our unemployment rate while forging a healthy lifestyle.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
The most important lesson we’ve learned is to be ready so you don’t have to get ready
