Today we’d like to introduce you to Brenna Doyle.
Hi Brenna, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started Six Foot Fit in March 2020 when I was laid off from my corporate group fitness coaching job from covid. I knew that being laid off was the kick in the a** I needed to finally do what I have always dreamed of- starting my own group fitness business based on authenticity, realness, and treating people as humans rather than part of a bottom line. I have been a personal trainer since 2018 and a group fitness instructor for two years. With my experience, I saw so many gaps in the industry that I knew I could fill and create a workout environment where people enjoyed the process instead of just the outcome. We started off with only two pairs of dumbbells, and now we have a whole trailer gym we bring to classes with us!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I believe the universe is powerful and abundant, so after a few months of figuring out my flow, I realized that no matter what, I will be okay. Being that we are an outdoor workout group, we had to endure the hot temperatures of NC summers and the cold winters. Even still, we made it through stronger and better than before. I had to upgrade my car in order to get a trailer and just really listen to the feedback we received on how to improve, grow, and shape our classes. Feedback is everything. It definitely has not been smooth, but I have learned to see curveballs as opportunities for growth.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Honestly it all started by accident! I wanted to make personal training more accessible, as not everyone can afford $70/hour. Six Foot Fit provides outdoor group personal training focused on growing together and achieving incredible results. We have a class schedule that’s great for even the busiest person, you can view it here.
We specialize in creating fun workouts that are unconventional. We do more than just your typical exercises. We are known as the “Anti Gym”, as we go the extra mile in everything we do – you don’t get that at big corporate gyms or chains, because well…they don’t have to.
Our latest offering is our Beginners Classes (click here) and our Kids Classes (click here). Beginners don’t need big box gyms, they need experienced trainers to help them with form, accountability, and consistency in a judgment-free zone. We do all that and more. Our Six Foot KIDS classes are to keep kids moving and off the screens. They coincide with our adult classes on Thursday and Sunday mornings so parents can take their own class while their kid(s) take their kids class!
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Starting a new routine? The hardest part is coming to your first class. When it comes to tough decisions, I like the Mel Robbins 5 second rule: Countdown from 5-1 and then just DO IT! Just sign up. Once you do that, your mind already makes the commitment. Book your classes in advance.
Business-wise? Stay true to your values and listen to your people. Don’t try to do what everyone else is doing because then you are watering down the experience you provide and becoming just another variation of the same thing. Focus on your people; give them the best experience they’ve ever had. Many businesses make the mistake of trying to scale too quickly, which people FEEL.
Go all in. All the way. In the words of Charles Bukowski, “If you’re going to start, go all the way. Otherwise, don’t even try.”
