Today we’d like to introduce you to Daria Harvey.
Hi Daria, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve had several jobs over my lifetime-media research analyst, focus group moderator, stay at home mom (best one!) and preschool teacher. Looking back, I realize I had ideas and implemented organization in each of these capacities. It just comes naturally to me. I joke that I was “born this way.” Since organizing came so naturally to me, I assumed it was easy and no big deal. I eventually came to realize that some people do not have organizing as a skill, or at least don’t have the time to organize or don’t find it fun like I do. After this realization, I started my company Your Organized Life. I find it immensely satisfying to put order to someone’s space and ultimately make their life easier.
I’ve also started a second company-Legacy Needlepoint. After my mother passed away in February 2020, I inherited all her needlepoint as I am the only daughter and stitcher in the family. I found myself wondering “when did she stitch this?” “why did she choose this canvas?” “did she try any new stitches on this canvas?” So I created a journal just for needlepointers which is sold in needlepoint stores across the country and on my Etsy site. I love to think of stitchers out there documenting the heirloom pieces they stitch.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I think if the road is smooth you are not learning and growing. It took me a long time to realize that some projects and clients were exactly my types, and others weren’t. Also, some clients were always asking me for a discount and I finally learned to stand firm with my prices.
Ups and downs are inevitable and I believe it’s important to enjoy and celebrate the ups and instead of feeling sad or stressed about the downs to think “what is the real problem and is there anything I can do to solve this?”
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Your Organized Life?
I create calm in my client’s lives by organizing their home according to their personality. What works for one person doesn’t always work for another. I think what sets me apart from others is that I not only organize a space but look for improvements to the client’s systems. For instance, if I’m hired to organize a pantry, I will also give tips to the client about more efficient ways to shop and meal plan. One extra that I like to give my clients is one free trip to a consignment store, thrift store or the landfill. I even have a small truck which holds lots of decluttered items!
What are your plans for the future?
One big change is the existence of my new company-Legacy Needlepoint. It’s such a creative outlet and I’m thinking of new offerings for the future. As for my organizing business, I am very content where it is right now. However, I am considering writing a book!
