Exploring Life & Business with Darren James-Brown of Southern Plug Magazine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Darren James-Brown. They and their team shared their story with us below:

Formally known as Carolina Hip Hop Culture Magazine, Southern Plug E-Magazine is a quarterly magazine and online blog that focuses on various contents of entertainment within the South. Southern Plug E-Magazine was developed to provide a spotlight to Southern aspiring artists, DJs, producers, events, and music industry professionals of all genres. Southern Plug E-Magazine’s mission is to educate, inspire, and entertain you through the pages of its magazines, events, shows, commercials, videos, mixtapes, and more. In 2016, Southern Plug Magazine’s owner, Darren James, launched the Annual Southern Plug Music Awards with some other contributors, which was created solely to reward the achievements of Southern independent artists, models, radio personalities, moguls, and more. The Southern Plug Music Awards’ mission is to lead a culturally diverse award show that caters to the talent and success of independent and major entertainment artist within the South. The Southern Plug Music Awards is an annual award show weekend which includes an annual meet and greet, award show Galla, and occasionally a church event! 

The Southern Plug Music Awards has many sponsors and media sponsors alike and is a non-profit event in which all proceeds either go back into the current or the next year’s event and or is given to charity. The dynamic creative partnership of Co-Producers; Darren James created the awards as a way to focus on the best in southern entertainment and southern talent. This unique event also fits in well with our slogan, “Highlighting Southern Achievement.” The Southern Plug Music Awards is the next generation of Award Shows! The Southern Plug Music Awards are coming back for a 5th year in a row on Sunday, June 30th, in Charlotte, NC.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been an easy road doing what I do. We have overcome multiple obstacles, launching and running both Southern Plug Magazine and the Southern Plug Music Awards! In spite of those obstacles, we still stand today. As we prepare for our 5th annual Southern Plug Music Awards. A celebration of Southern Plug Magazine’s 9th Anniversary! 

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Southern Plug Magazine?
We here at Southern Plug specialize in promoting local, independent, and major entertainers and creatives through the pages of our new quarterly magazine, award shows, showcases, and website. 

How do you define success?
Success is in the eye of the beholder. To me, I first felt successful the first time an artist that has worked with us signed a major deal or when a movie production company we’ve worked with received their distribution deal. We are a company of the creatives. We win when our patrons win simply because our goal is to promote and shine a light on creatives like this. This is the most fulfilling part of my job, for sure.
