Exploring Life & Business with Dorcas Fulton of Top Tier Financial & Business Solutions

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dorcas Fulton.

Dorcas, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey to entrepreneurship started with my parents. My mother and father had their own business, Fulton’s Carpet Service, and were raised on with that business. I have always looked up to my parents because of their strength and determination to succeed and with that drive and determination, they were able to raise 3 children and provide community service as much as possible. I watched them build a successful flooring business, an afterschool program for the children in the community, participate in multiple outreach opportunities which is why my heart and mind are the way they are today.

At the age of 9, my father passed away of Prostate Cancer, and seeing my mother continue and grow the business after his death showed me how strong of a woman that she is and that even when times are hard you have to continue to fight for what you want. Unfortunately in 2019, my mother lost, “won”, her battle with Ovarian Cancer which ended up igniting fuel inside of me. The fuel that I was always born with, ENTREPRENEURSHIP.

I started working at the age of 15 years old but I knew even at the age of 15 that I wanted more for my life, I wanted that autonomy that my parents had but at this time I had no knowledge of the business world so I settled for working for others. I have held numerous positions in my life all dealing with finances and business which helped steer me in the direction the right direction. I started out as a cashier, moved to management over an entire company, then moved to account, administrative assistant, back to accounting and public relations manager, and ended up as a Jill of all trades. During my multitude of positions, I started businesses, from the age of 10 years old selling rugs outside of our home to the age of 18 selling one-of-a-kind swimsuits, to now being the owner of multiple businesses that I love and enjoy.

But who am I today? I am a single mother of 2 very smart and talented young boys that I adore and that adore me. I am a businesswoman, philanthropist, thrill-seeker, extrovert that loves numbers and loves to enjoy life to its fullest.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being a business owner is FAR from being a smooth road and if anyone tells you that it is they are definitely not telling the whole story. Being a business owner means taking on risks and being able to maneuver through the many obstacles that are put on your path to success. A few hurdles that I had to jump are marketing, because I am not a marketing guru, asking for help, because I was raised to be a strong independent woman so it made me feel like asking for help was a sign of weakness (but I did get over it).

A few other obstacles that I have had to overcome were taking that leap of faith and being financially stable enough to do so. I did quit my 9-5 to pursue my dreams of being an entrepreneur, this was my biggest hurdle, and in doing so, at the time, I did not take into account the months and days where I may not have made any money, nor did I take into account a pandemic happening and the world coming to a halt.

But with the help of my family friends whether it was through financial support, referring clients to me, or just marketing my business I was able to come out of this hurdle. Overall, I would say in order to be a successful business owner you have to learn that the path that you created for your business may not be the path that you are supposed to be on but, just because your path threw a few curves balls at you that doesn’t mean that your destination wont is the same.

As you know, we’re big fans of Top Tier Financial & Business Solutions, LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Our company, Top Tier Financial & Business Solutions, LLC, specializes in simplifying the lives of business owners through Financial and Business solutions. The thing about our business is that we aren’t just a financial & business solutions company we also focus on generational wealth building. How does this come into play with business’s while speaking with our clients we focus more on their goals for the future to provide them with a plan that will fit your current situation and that will shape you for your future.

But the difference between our meaning of generational wealth and other’s that to us generational wealth is financial, healthy living, and education. This is why we created a nonprofit branch of our business, Intentional Generational Wealth Builders, where we teach others how to build generational wealth in all aspects of their lives.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
The industry that I am in will probably never change because there will always be businesses that need to be built, taxes to be filed, and consultations to be had. Being in the financial and business service industry almost guarantees steady work as long as your business is running properly.

I project there will not be any big shifts or changes in my particular industry but I do a project that my two niches will be on rollercoaster rides due to the pandemic’s manipulation of jobs and interest rates for housing which in turn created a high demand and caused a low supply in the housing market.
