Exploring Life & Business with Doug Pawlak of Clayton Ghost Walks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Doug Pawlak.

Hi Doug, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
As part of being a long time History teacher, I’ve always enjoyed telling stories to more actively engage with my audience. I also enjoy conducting historical research, two traits that certainly have helped me get started with this business. Since I love history so much, I make a whole lot of effort into visiting historical sites along with my family and friends. Many times, we go on ghost tours while visiting some of these places. Years ago, I wondered if the town I lived in had stories of its own, as every town does. Talking to some helpful local business owners and locals about their experiences with the unexplained convinced me that there was a lot to be told here.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
This being the first time I had ever officially done something like this meant there was a bit of a learning curve. I spent quite a few hours trying to decide what website company I would use, how to navigate their program, what all needs to be done to get this business started, where and how to advertise, and what costs will be initially incurred.. But it’s been worth it so far.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Clayton Ghost Walks?
I enjoy conducting guided walks through the downtown Clayton, NC area, telling stories and interesting facts as we go from location to location. I believe we offer a good entertainment value for our services, and we strive to tell stories that have been verified through primary sources. I am very proud of the initial results of starting this business. The positive reviews, selling out the first two months since we got started. I hope this level of interest can continue through the fall. I love all things spooky, and if I’ve made anyone’s life just a little more interesting or enjoyable, by sharing the stories that I have, then this job will be a source of never ending satisfaction.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
Fellow guide Kara Shoup has been instrumental in helping to get this business started. From refining stories, to advice on routes we should take, etc.. Her help has been instrumental. I have also received a lot of initial encouragement from friends and family, with previous co-workers all supporting my tours. My wife Shannon, along with some family friends went along with me from place to place, and gave me suggestions as to make it more engaging. Lastly, the customers themselves, , have been just great. I can’t have asked for a better group of people to travel the streets of Clayton with. They’ve been so much fun, demonstrating interest, and telling me stories of their own. It’s been so much fun and they are the reason why.
