Exploring Life & Business with Douglas E. Robertson of Able Anchor

Today we’d like to introduce you to Douglas E. Robertson.

Douglas E. Robertson

Hi Douglas E., thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am a Raleigh native, born and raised right here in this community. My journey started at East Carolina University, where I graduated in 1995 with a degree in Human Services. At the time, I thought my path was strictly social work, but life had a slightly different plan. In 1996, I obtained my insurance license, and I quickly realized that these two seemingly different worlds actually shared a common heart: the desire to protect and advocate for families.

For over 30 years, I’ve worked to bridge that gap. I’ve always strived to mesh the empathy and advocacy of a social worker with the tangible tools and resources of the insurance industry. People often see insurance as a complex, “invisible” product that’s hard to wrap their heads around. My purpose has been to change that by answering insurance questions with absolute clarity.

I founded Able Anchor to be exactly what the name implies a source of stability. Whether it’s Life, Property, Bonds,  Casualty, or Commercial Business Insurance, I pride myself on painting a clear picture with descriptive words so that my clients don’t just buy a policy; they gain an understanding of the product. I often tell people that insurance isn’t important until the very second you need it. That’s why I get so much joy out of securing the tangibles and intangibles for my neighbors here in the Triangle.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Looking back, I wish I could say it’s been a perfectly smooth journey, but the “roadblocks” in this industry are often deeply personal. One of the biggest challenges I face isn’t just business competition; it’s the difficulty of helping families confront the realities of life’s “three-way fork in the road.”

In our life journey, individuals will typically face one of three paths: they will either pass away too young, live too long and outlive their resources, or become ill or disabled along the way. These are tough conversations to have at a kitchen table, but they are necessary. Historically, families have relied on a few traditional methods to offset these cycles: Cash on Hand, Liquidation of Property, or a Structured Insurance Plan.

Lately, a new “obstacle” has emerged in the form of Crowdfunding (GoFundMe accounts). While it’s a beautiful testament to community support, relying on it as a primary safety net is a significant risk. Less than 12% of those campaigns reach their goals, and they often come with platform fees and tax implications that families aren’t prepared for during a tragedy. My challenge and my mission is overcoming the misconception that a digital tip jar is a substitute for a fortified plan. Building Able Anchor has been about shifting that narrative from one of fear to one of clarity and resolve.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
What truly sets my work apart is the lens through which I view this industry. I don’t approach a client’s needs as a series of policy numbers; I approach them with the heart of a social worker. In an industry that is often criticized for being “transactional,” I focus on being transformational.

Most people find insurance intimidating or intentionally vague. I see it as my mission to “dymystify” the fine print. I pride myself on using descriptive, clear language to paint a picture of what a family’s future looks like with and without a solid foundation. At Able Anchor, we don’t just sell “invisible products.” We provide a fortified resolve.

I also believe my deep roots as a Raleigh native give me a unique advantage. I’m not a corporate transplant; I’m a neighbor. When I talk to a business owner or a young family in the Triangle about protecting their future, it’s not a sales pitch it’s a Community Service! By combining 30 years of technical expertise in Life, Property, Casualty, and Commercial Business insurance with the empathy of my social work background, I offer a level of clarity and personalized care that you just won’t find in a call center or an automated app.
