Today we’d like to introduce you to Evan Lindsey.
Hi Evan, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
After attending UNC-Wilmington, majoring in Business Management & Leadership, I returned to Raleigh to begin a career. After a brief spell in sales, I decided to turn my focus to something I was familiar and comfortable with in the game of soccer. Working at Netsports Sports Complex in Morrisville, I began working in every position I could as a front desk associate, camp counselor, soccer coach, and soccer referee. As I gained experience I was given more opportunities to coach. I began working with Next Level Academy, owned and operated by UNC Women’s assistant coach Damon Nahas, as well as with North Carolina Football Club Youth ( formerly CASL). After working with NLA and NCFC for over a year the COVID pandemic began and shut down all soccer operations. While waiting for things to start back up and assessing my options I began to offer private lessons to youth players who I had worked with in the past in both programs. Throughout the summer of 2020, I began marketing my services through my youth soccer connections and gained more clientele. To date, I have worked with 30+ players ranging from ages 6 to 17 across all skill levels in individual and small group training sessions. I currently am conducting my private trainings along with coaching 3 youth teams, birth years 2013/2012(Juniors level),2011(classic level) at NCFC Youth, while continuing to referee and consulting with other programs like Prescient Soccer, run by Marcus Luster and Giancarlo Soprano in Apex.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has a been a very exciting, but challenging road to get where I’ve gotten so far. I still have a long way to go, but through the connections I’ve built throughout the soccer scene in the triangle, it has allowed me to market myself easier and establish connections in multiple programs that have supported me. A couple of the main challenges I’ve faced is consistency in maintaining clients, scheduling, and field availability. I have had several players who I have worked with over a year and have built a solid foundation with, but there are other times where parents may only be looking to train for a short period of time before the club/school season starts or a tournament. There are also times where there is just a lack of communication and the times between sessions slowly dwindle. It can also be difficult scheduling sessions between my other work schedules, parents work schedules, the players’ school/club soccer schedules as well. I try to be as flexible as possible, but there can be times it takes a while to reach a good opening for everyone. I am also very blessed to have to opportunity to use a lot of public facilities/fields like WRAL Soccer Park in Raleigh or Thomas Brooks Park in Cary, avoiding rental fees, but distance of travel and finding convenient locations for all parties can become challenging at times.
We’ve been impressed with Evan Lindsey Soccer & Fitness Training, LLC., but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business specializes in private supplemental training for youth athletes, primarily soccer, of almost all ages and skill levels. I offer opportunities to train individually 1 on 1 or in a small group setting with other players to sharpen technical skills, speed, agility, and overall coordination. I am known for my hands-on sessions that work on breaking down each specific activity or exercise for full understanding and retention. I pride myself on providing a fun and exciting atmosphere where athletes can be comfortable learning from mistakes, exploring new actions, and building their style of play. I strive to be a coach who pushes and challenges athletes to steadily improve and reach their potential, but to also be patient in the process and nurture their development.
Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Risk-taking is something that occurs in everyone’s daily life, but certain risks, especially those pertaining to one’s professional life can truly make or break a career. Some go for broke, investing everything they have, in order reach certain goals, while others can play it safe and take much smaller steps towards a direction. In my life, I’ve taken certain risks by being mainly self-employed and not choosing the business profession that my academic background points to. There have many voices around me throughout recent years telling me to move in another direction and settle with a more steady and consistent line of work, but when you’re passionate and motivated to do something in particular it can be mentally taxing when your energy doesn’t go towards what you really want to invest yourself in. I want to continue building on taking more calculated risks towards my goals because it is true that the rewards are higher with greater investment. Having a clear plan can help build confidence when making these decisions.
