Exploring Life & Business with Eve Craig of Smallcakes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eve Craig.

Hi Eve, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have always been a lover of sweets and enjoyed baking at home in my downtime or for the holidays. I went into business with my sister back in 2007 in the insurance industry, but that was not my passion, so the goal was to eventually do something I loved! Smallcakes Durham opened up across the street from one of my sister’s insurance agencies I was working at, so I went in one day to see what it was all about.

It was a cupcakery and I thought the product was amazing! I Googled Smallcakes, saw it was a franchise, did my research, prayed about it, and before I knew it, I was opening up my very own in Huntersville, NC (March 2016). In May of 2018, I was given the opportunity to buy out Smallcakes Cary & Durham, NC, and became the new owner of those two locations in May of 2019.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road, but I still enjoy it to this day! There are all kinds of obstacles along the way, from getting funding to start your business, staffing issues as the restaurant industry is known for high turnover, staying competitive, and giving customers a reason to come to your bakery and not go somewhere else for their dessert needs, and so much more.

Simply being a small business is a challenge in itself. One of the most recent challenges was COVID! That by far was one of the hardest obstacles to get over, but we did… all three of my locations!

Smallcakes is a franchise cupcakery that specializes in cupcakes. We are known for our cupcakes, but we offer so much more from brownies, cake pops, cookie sandwiches, birthday cakes, wedding cakes, and custom sugar cookies. We can do just about anything!

We offer 13 to 14 Signature Cupcake flavors daily with Two Weekly Special flavors that change every Monday. What sets us apart from most bakeries is the size of our cupcakes and how moist they are!! Smallcakes is worldwide with some locations offering our homemade ice cream and milkshakes as well.

We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I think most people would be surprised to know that I never intended on being a baker and owning a bakery. I always wanted to be a CPA!
