Today we’d like to introduce you to Iris Kagore.
Hi Iris, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey began from a place of deep purpose and faith. After more than twenty years as a special education teacher, I saw firsthand the growing gap in services for neurodivergent children. Many students were caught in the middle—too advanced for self-contained classrooms but struggling to succeed in mainstream settings. With the ongoing shortage of special education teachers, resources were stretched, and both educators and parents were left feeling overwhelmed.
Burned out but still passionate about helping children, I began tutoring in local libraries and traveling to families’ homes. Along the way, a kind woman discovered my work on Facebook and introduced me to a supportive community of professionals serving children with exceptional needs. That connection changed everything. I started attending community events, sharing my vision, and watching it grow. I truly believe God placed the right people in my path to make it all possible.
To strengthen my impact, I returned to school to earn my Master’s in Intellectual Disabilities (Mild to Moderate) while already being a National Board-Certified Teacher in Special Education. Taking a leap of faith, I left the classroom to focus on what I love most—helping children reach their fullest potential.
Today, I’m proud to own Unique Expressions Tutoring Services in Cary, North Carolina, where every child is given the tools, patience, and encouragement to succeed.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey has been both rewarding and challenging. It’s been smooth in the sense that the right people have been placed in my life exactly when I needed them most especially when it came time to finding a location for my tutoring center. But before reaching that point, the road was anything but easy.
In the early days, I traveled from place to place with my teaching materials packed in the trunk of my car, meeting students in libraries, homes, and anywhere I could. There were days spent driving in the cold and rain, and times when exhaustion set in. Balancing family life, marriage, friendships, and graduate school all while starting a business was incredibly difficult. I often asked myself how I was managing it all.
Financially, it was also a leap of faith. Leaving the security of a steady paycheck to pursue my calling was a major sacrifice. But through every hurdle, God provided exactly what I needed. My faith has been my foundation carrying me through the uncertainty, reminding me that every challenge was preparing me for the purpose I now live each day.
