Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Uribe.
Hi Jennifer, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m originally from Mexico, raised here in Durham and I’ve been here for majority of my life. My beauty career started when I was in high school, someone suggested the cosmetology program to me, and I didn’t think twice about it. I didn’t realize until I was in the classroom how legit the program was. I graduated with an apprenticeship! I don’t think I was prepared for the real environment of a hair salon. It’s so much more than what the school is teaching you, and it’s been the best learning experience. I worked at a beauty salon for 4 years before taking a leap into my own business. I’m currently self-employed at Siempre Bella doing lash extensions, facials, haircuts, and waxing.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Getting out into the real world after school was a big struggle; having to relearn everything and learn new skills to make more income was the biggest thing. I don’t have the biggest confidence in myself when it comes to putting my new skill to work, and I’ll self-doubt myself along the way throughout the process. That’ll really set me back at times, even though I do keep pushing myself until I get where I want to be.
As you know, we’re big fans of Siempre Bella. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
At Siempre Bella I specialize in lashing, other services provided include facials, waxing and haircuts. My suite currently does not have access to running water, so I am limited on the services I can provide. The lash sets I provide are usually inspired by my clients, they’ll tell me what they have in mind or show me an inspo photo and we’ll go from there. I love my clients I can’t thank them enough for getting me where I’m at today. Without the support of the people who believe in me, I wouldn’t be where I’m at now. I do have bigger plans for the near future and with the help and support of my friends and family I’m sure I’ll make my dreams happen!
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
You have to love what you do. So many people get into the industry as a way to make money quick and later learn it’s not what they want to be doing. Having passion in what you do makes it feel like every accomplishment and achievement has value. I’m thankful for my teachers, mentors, and colleagues I’ve made along the way. I’ve learned something from all of them, and I’m grateful for the opportunities they gave me.
