Exploring Life & Business with Madison of J. Major’s Bridal Boutique

Today we’d like to introduce you to Madison.

Hi Madison, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I actually began my journey in bridal back in my college years in New Orleans. I worked as a bridal stylist for two of the city’s most iconic boutiques: Town and Country Bridal and Yvonne LaFleur. Those early years taught me everything about the beauty and emotion behind helping a bride find her dress. I fell in love with the process, the styling, the connections, the joy of seeing someone light up when she’s found the one.

After college, I took a very different path and began working for the State of Louisiana with roles in museum management and university fundraising. But deep down, I missed the creative energy and the personal relationships that come with bridal. When the opportunity came to purchase J. Major’s Bridal Boutique, my partner and I knew it was meant to be. We packed up, moved to Charlotte, and began a new chapter.

J. Major’s has a beautiful legacy of matching generations of women with their wedding gowns. The store was founded in 1984 by James Major Hanson as J. Major’s Total Wedding Concepts, a one-stop destination for everything wedding. Over time, it evolved into the bridal gown boutique Charlotte knows and loves today. We’ve built on that foundation, combining the store’s history with a modern approach that celebrates each bride’s individuality and story.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, definitely not! But the challenges have shaped us. As an independent bridal boutique, we pour our hearts into every single appointment. Over the years, we’ve seen a wave of corporate bridal chains enter the market, bringing with them high-pressure sales models and cookie-cutter experiences. That’s never been who we are.

Our biggest challenge, and also our proudest mission, has been helping brides understand the difference a boutique experience makes. At J. Major’s, we don’t chase sales goals; we chase joy, confidence, and connection. Every appointment is personal. Every gown is chosen with care. Our brides feel seen, understood, and celebrated, and that’s something no chain can replicate.

As you know, we’re big fans of J. Major’s Bridal Boutique. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
J. Major’s Bridal Boutique is proud to be one of Charlotte’s most established and trusted bridal destinations. We specialize in designer bridal gowns that blend timeless elegance with modern design, the kind of gowns that feel like you.

What sets us apart is our experience and heart. Our stylists are true bridal experts who take the time to get to know each bride, her personality, her story, her dreams for the day. We believe the dress should feel as good as it looks, and the shopping experience should be as memorable as the wedding itself.

We carry carefully curated designer lines and exclusive collections you won’t find elsewhere, all selected for quality, craftsmanship, and style. But beyond that, what truly defines J. Major’s is how much we care. For more than 40 years, we’ve helped brides, mothers, sisters, and friends celebrate one of life’s most meaningful moments and that’s a privilege we take seriously.

Any big plans?
We’re really excited about what’s ahead. We’re expanding our designer selection to include even more inclusive sizing and styles so that every bride feels represented and celebrated. We’re also continuing to collaborate with local wedding vendors to strengthen our ties within the Charlotte wedding community.

We have also been collaborating with a dressmaker in Europe to create completely original designs for our brides. Since I am on the sales floor nearly every day, I hear what brides truly want. I am using that intel to develop pieces that are unique and capture the essence of the brides we attract. I’m open to feedback: the gowns will be totally customizable to achieve a bride’s vision.

Beyond that, we’re leaning into storytelling. We want to share more of our real brides, their love stories, and the magic that happens behind the scenes in our boutique. There’s so much heart in what we do, and we want to let people see it.
