Exploring Life & Business with Mandy Murphy of Mandy Murphy Co.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mandy Murphy.

Hi Mandy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My dad was a life long CPA in Durham. I spend the majority of my early career in non-profit leadership, with side work in small business bookkeeping and financial operations. About 5 years ago, I left non-profit work to enter the field of grief support. On the outside that may seem like a 180 degree pivot, but since losing my first husband to a random cardiac event when he was 30 years old, I knew I wanted to support people going through difficult life transitions. I trained in individual and group grief coaching and launched Mandy Murphy Co.

Then, my dad got sick and asked if he could name me as successor trustee and power of attorney for one of his long-time clients. Of course I agreed, and dove into this work in parallel with my grief support work. After working with this client for about a year, I started to get inquiries from estate attorneys, accountants, financial planners, social workers at retirement communities and adult children who live in other states about my interest in taking on other clients. I decided to make the role official, became a Certified Daily Money Manager and started to say yes to new client referrals – thus launching the sister business under Mandy Murphy Co. The powerful intersection of grief and daily money management surprised me. It is not just about bills, bookkeeping, passwords, autopay, cash flow reporting, insurance and taxes. Many of my clients are experiencing significant loss – of loved one who always did the finances, of cognitive function, of independence, of eye sight, of mental clarity to track along with all that is coming at them and of spaces they called home for most of their lives. So yes, the work I do is about finances, organization, resourcefulness and efficiency but more so, it is about empathy, trust, respect and dignity. I love this work so much and am so grateful that my dad opened the door for me to serve my community in this way. As my husband said, “Steve Harris knew exactly what he was doing!”

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Mandy Murphy Co. grew pretty quickly so now I have to get my processes and systems cleaned up and in place to support the rapid growth. I am getting there but that takes some night and weekend time!

As a small business, finding tech support has been a challenge. As part of the systems and processes work, I have identified several tech related needs but finding affordable options for tech infrastructure and support has been difficult.

My Daily Money Manager clients are at a phase of life where scheduling, technology and communication can pose challenges so this role requires a lot of flexibility and creativity. Remembering or tracking passwords can be tricky for my clients (well, for all of us I think!) so that also requires some creative resourcefulness!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in helping people manage their daily financial lives while also offering compassionate support through health changes or life transitions. As a certified Daily Money Manager, I take care of the practical details—paying bills, balancing checkbooks, organizing tax and insurance documents, resolving billing errors, even making sense of medical claims—so my clients can stay financially organized and stress-free. I also act as a trusted partner, coordinating with attorneys, accountants, or financial advisors when needed to ensure everything runs smoothly. Alongside that, I provide gentle guidance for those navigating grief or big life changes, offering space to process and to gain a deeper understanding of what they are going through. What sets me apart is the combination of hands-on expertise and background in grief support—I help clients maintain their dignity, safeguard their financial health, and feel confident knowing their everyday financial needs are being met while also connecting into the very human experience of grieving.
