Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcellus Bowman.
Hi Marcellus, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up in Youngstown, Ohio and went on to play safety at Boston College, where I also met my wife—she grew up in Durham, North Carolina, which became an important part of my life. After college, I signed in the NFL and then built a five-year CFL career, first with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and later the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. North Carolina became my off-season home throughout my playing career and later during my time coaching in the NCAA.
My career ended earlier than I wanted because of injury, and that experience reshaped me. I decided to dedicate the rest of my life to making sure others don’t have to go through what I went through. That led me into coaching, where I’ve had the opportunity to work at Auburn University, UCF, and now as the Head Strength & Conditioning Coach for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Along the way, I also spent time in Raleigh, NC, personal training and helping everyday people chase their goals.
In 2020, I launched EatSleepPeak, my online training and supplement company based in North Carolina. That business grew out of my belief that performance, health, and longevity are all connected—and that athletes and everyday people alike can benefit from practical, evidence-based training and nutrition.
Although I now coach at the professional level, I’ve worked with all ages and all goals—from fat loss and muscle gain, to bikini competitions, to youth athletes just learning the game. The throughline in my journey has always been the same: serve others, build durable athletes, and help people become the best version of themselves.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been a smooth road at all. The transition from being a professional athlete to the “real world” is one of the toughest challenges I’ve ever faced. My career ended prematurely due to injury—right after the birth of my first child. At that point, my body was broken down: turf toe in both toes, plantar fasciitis in both feet, Achilles tendonitis in both ankles, ankle impingement, hamstring and quad pulls, patella tendonitis, chondromalacia in both knees, arthritis, and more. I woke up in pain every single day while trying to reinvent myself with very few skills that translated outside of football. That experience shaped my entire training philosophy: durability matters more than raw ability.
After leaving football, I took a sales job to help with the transition. I quit coaching at UCF, moved my family back to North Carolina, and right after we put down a deposit on a new apartment, I lost that job before I even started—because of the pandemic. My wife had already lost her job in Florida, she was pregnant with our third child, and suddenly, we were both unemployed. That’s when I started my own business, charging almost nothing just to keep food on the table.
Going from the highest of highs as a pro athlete to the lowest of lows as an unemployed father taught me the work ethic I carry to this day. It’s why I approach both coaching and business with a relentless mindset—because I know what it’s like to have everything stripped away and to fight for every step forward.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about EatSleepPeak, LLC?
My business, EatSleepPeak, is based in North Carolina but services people all over the world. At its core, I provide customized and semi-customized online training and nutrition coaching, backed by supplements I’ve personally formulated—like my Peak Performance Elite Pre-Workout and Peak Recovery ZMA. I also recently authored The 1% – The Athlete’s Guide to Nutrition, Sleep and Peak Performance, which captures the same philosophy I use with athletes and clients daily.
What I’m best known for is my all-encompassing approach to performance, fat loss, and muscle gain. Most coaches over-focus on one piece of the puzzle—training or nutrition. What sets me apart is the EatSleepPeak methodology, which brings together the three levers that actually create lasting change:
Eat – fuel properly for your goals
Sleep – sustain progress, recover faster, and build longevity
Peak – training and body maintenance designed to unlock new levels of performance
This holistic approach removes the dogma of “one-size-fits-all” programs and helps people make sustainable progress no matter where they’re starting.
What I’m most proud of, brand-wise, is that I’ve grown almost entirely through reputation and referrals. I’m not a flashy marketer—I’ve built trust by delivering results. To me, that’s the biggest compliment any solopreneur can get.
And finally, I want readers to know: EatSleepPeak isn’t about me—it’s about you. The philosophy is centered on getting you what you deserve. Whether you’re unsure what to do, struggling with time, money, or motivation, our first consult is designed to break through those barriers so I can create a program that will actually work for you.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My advice for anyone just starting out is simple:
Love what you do—or love the people you do it for. If love isn’t involved, please don’t become a coach. This profession demands too much energy and emotional investment to do it halfway.
Get good at what you do—and get good fast. Study, learn, and push yourself to become the smartest person in the room. Then find a new room with smarter people and repeat the process. Growth is never-ending.
Practice the preach. As coaches, we can’t just talk the talk—we have to live it. If you coach athletes, you should still be running and jumping. If you coach fat loss, put yourself on a diet multiple times a year. If you coach injury rehab, you should be training hard enough to understand what it feels like to push through setbacks. Certifications are only as valuable as the coach who applies them in real life.
If I could go back, I’d remind myself of these same things. Coaching isn’t about a job title—it’s about embodying the standard you expect from others.
