Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Martineau.
Megan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I always loved fitness and grew up an athlete. Five years ago, I became a certified personal trainer with the desire to help others fall in love with fitness and taking care of their bodies. But once I became pregnant, I realized how much the fitness industry does pregnant and postpartum bodies a disservice.
There is very little education out there about how to train safely and effectively during pregnancy, as well as recovering during the postpartum period. A lot of the advice that IS out there is to modify and take it easy. However, I learned firsthand after having a c-section delivery with my son and a rough recovery period that that advice did more harm than good.
When I was cleared to work out at 6 weeks postpartum, I found myself weaker than I had ever been. Any workout I tried doing left me feeling drained, depleted, and discouraged. I knew there had to be a better way, so I enrolled in a pre/postnatal specialist course.
As I applied everything I was learning to myself, I was shocked at the transformation that took place. My pelvic pain improved, my diastasis recti began to heal, my abs began to feel stronger than they were even pre-pregnancy, and I no longer experienced back pain lifting and carrying my son around.
I continued to feel stronger, and that sense of accomplishment in my workouts carried over to the other aspects of my life such as being a mom and a wife! I knew that I needed to pass this knowledge along to other expectant and postpartum moms to help take the confusion out of fitness and help them feel like themselves again.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Building a business in the online space is tough. Especially in the fitness industry because there is a lot of competition. Establishing an audience and setting myself apart from other trainers has definitely been hard.
I’ve also had the challenge of building a business while being a full-time mom! I quit my full-time job back in 2021 so I could go all-in on my business, but I also have my son at home with me.
I have to find pockets of time to work, like waking up early, during his naps, or after he goes down for the night. Starting a business definitely means sacrifice, but I am so passionate about the work I’m doing and the people I am serving so it makes it all worth it!
As you know, we’re big fans of Vibrant Mama Wellness, LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Vibrant Mama Wellness, LLC is a female-owned personal training business specializing in pre and postnatal fitness. Our mission is to help moms feel vibrant during pregnancy, postpartum, and beyond.
Childbirth is often said to be one of the most physically demanding events of a person’s lifetime, and can even be compared to running a marathon. Our goal is to train moms-to-be effectively so that they have the tools to have the birth experience they desire and an easier and quicker postpartum recovery.
There is a lot of noise in the fitness industry about “bouncing back” but we disagree with this term. A body that has gone through pregnancy and childbirth is not the same body it was pre-pregnancy. It is impossible to go back there.
Instead, we must look forward and celebrate how powerful and strong the postpartum body is and all the amazing things it has accomplished!
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
The specialty of pre/postnatal fitness is definitely newer. Even 5 years ago, I wasn’t seeing much in this space.
I think in the next 5-10 years you’ll see a lot of trainers pop up specializing in this demographic and hopefully changing the narrative around what it means to work out during pregnancy and into postpartum. I hope that we see a shift to more of a focus on functionality rather than aesthetics because that is really where the magic happens.
I hope that we will also see the collaboration of midwives/OBGYNS working with pre and postnatal fitness specialists as well as pelvic floor physical therapists! Especially in the United States, a lot more needs to be done to support our pre and postnatal population, and having comprehensive and holistic care would be huge.
