Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Green.
Hi Melissa, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started Picture Perfect Picnics in the Spring of 2020. I love picnics because you can learn so much about a region and culture by picking up some simple goodies at the local market. Without the fuss of preparing an elaborate meal or spending loads of money at a fancy restaurant, you can slow down and absorb the heart of a community. Stretching your bare feet out on a blanket with some sumptuous goodies pulls you back in time and heightens your senses. You begin to appreciate simple things such as the warm sun on your face, the smells of exotic flowers, the buzz of the locals chatting in the park, and the taste of simple, quality foods. Picnics take you back to a time when things moved at a slower pace you could spend your care-free days outdoors all day!
As far as my research showed the only other company doing something similar was in Texas. It took some time to establish a relationship with the parks, but they loved the idea and were great with working with us. One time a police patrol even stopped us mid-set up to see what we were doing! We have had the honor and the privilege of setting up many proposal picnics and working with a ton of amazing local businesses.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Since a business like this had not really existed before we had a blaze some trails. Parks didn’t really know what to do with us (do they make us pay to rent the field space? Were we planning to provide alcohol? etc.) One time a police patrol stopped us during set up to see what we were doing! His initial concern turned into interest as we explained our business and that we had permission from the park to be there.
We also had to figure out one of the most important parts of a picnic – the food! There are so many rules and regulations regarding food prep (as there should be!). Eventually, we landed on partnering with some amazing local businesses to provide the food for our picnics. We currently offer customers their choice of either a charcuterie board from Raleigh Cheesy or a box lunch from Lucettegrace.
What started as the side hussle quickly got so busy that I had to quit my job at the bank and was able to set picnics up full time.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We curate moments of joy inspired by classic picnics. Our picnics are meant to be enjoyed, not just looked at. Every consideration for your comfort has been taken from preparing the grounds, laying down an insulated waterproof barrier, soft padding, plush pillows and luxury basket. Feel like a celebrity and treat yourself and your guests to a picnic you are sure to remember. You deserve it!
When you are done, we break down your picnic, dispose of any trash and clean up the area. We love creating special moments and memories by offering a unique Picture Perfect Picnic experience.
Each picnic includes food, bottled still water, sparkling Perrier water, and a game box. Our game box has everything to keep you entertained and comfortable during your picnic. We include sunscreen, bug repellent packets, hand sanitizer, battery fans, garbage bags, games, and maybe a few surprises!
Picture Perfect Picnics is unique because of the fact that we focus on classic picnics. We now offer a Bohemian Dining Table, but our passion is designing luxurious picnics the way they are supposed to be enjoyed. Another reason we stand out is our Picnic Themes. We have several themes including our Whimsical Garden, The Manhattan, French Country, Rustic Farmhouse, Enchanted Fall, Bohemian Dining, and our Friends and Family picnic for larger groups. Another thing that sets us apart is that we give our guests 2 1/2 hours to enjoy their picnic!
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
There are so many apps and groups that you can join. Raleigh is an amazing city to call home if you are a small business. Raleigh-ites treasure their small, local businesses. I was humbled and so touched at the outpouring of support from individuals and other small businesses.
