Corbett Collection in 2019 during his time in the Washington, DC area, Michael’s extensive expertise in menswear spans over a decade. His vision for the business was to provide discerning customers with unparalleled cloths, exquisite styling, and impeccable fits, allowing them to elevate their wardrobe to new heights. Notably, Michael Dawes stands out as one of the few black custom clothiers serving the eastern North Carolina region. However, his influence extends far beyond this area, encompassing Washington, DC, Virginia, Maryland, South Carolina, Georgia, California, and numerous other states. With a loyal clientele that spans across various states, Michael’s business continues to thrive and leave a lasting impression on his customers.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
t hasn’t always been a smooth journey. Balancing a full-time job while running a business comes with its own set of challenges. One of the biggest hurdles I’ve faced is trying to accommodate everyone’s budget and vision, which, at times, led to unnecessary stress and frustration. I had to learn that not every client is my client, and staying true to my value and expertise is what truly drives success.

Whether it’s a client putting on their first custom suit and seeing themselves in a new light, a young professional landing their dream job, or someone simply gaining the confidence to walk boldly in their purpose—I love witnessing that transformation. Growth and development, in any form, inspire me.

Now, on the lighter side, I have a deep love for classic cars, antique furniture, and good food. I guess you could say I have an appreciation for things that are well-made, have a story, and stand the test of time—whether that’s a perfectly restored Cadillac, a handcrafted 19th-century mahogany desk, or a plate of soul-satisfying shrimp and grits. If you ever see me staring off into the distance, I’m probably admiring a vintage car, debating whether I have space for another antique find, or planning my next great meal. It’s all about the little joys in life!
