Exploring Life & Business with Michael Robertson of Wright Time Financial

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Robertson

Hi Michael, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Michael Robertson, and I grew up in Cary, North Carolina, where I attended Cary High School and became an All-American wrestler. After high school, I went to the University of North Carolina at Pembroke (UNCP), but after two years, I realized that college wasn’t the right path for me. I decided to start a career in sales, landing a job at Hendrick Auto Park in Cary, where I worked my way up from a car salesperson to a finance manager. I spent 10 years in the car business, but as my family grew, I started looking for more control over my time and my life. I enjoyed working with people, but the daily grind at the dealership was no longer fulfilling.

That’s when I discovered the financial services industry. It offered me everything I was searching for: the freedom to be my own boss, the ability to help others by educating them, and the flexibility to manage my time as an entrepreneur. This shift allowed me to create a career that aligned with my goals and values while still connecting with people in meaningful ways.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting off as an entrepreneur in the financial service industry came with its challenges. People knew me for selling cars, not as someone who could help them with their finances. It was difficult to shift their perception and build credibility in a field that requires a deep level of trust. When it comes to people’s hard-earned money, they’re cautious, and rightly so.

I had to prove myself all over again—educating myself, earning certifications, and constantly showing people that I was committed to their financial well-being. I faced skepticism from potential clients who weren’t sure if I had the expertise to guide them through critical financial decisions. It wasn’t just about selling a product anymore; it was about establishing long-term relationships, offering value, and showing that I genuinely cared about their financial success.

Building trust didn’t happen overnight. I had to be patient, consistent, and demonstrate my knowledge time and again. The challenge of breaking into a new industry while shifting people’s expectations wasn’t easy, but every step forward reinforced my belief that I was on the right path.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
One of my favorite childhood memories was the first time I went away to basketball camp in the 6th grade. It was the first time I stayed in a dorm with peers, without my parents around, and it felt like a glimpse of what college life would be like. I remember the excitement of having so much freedom—staying up as late as we wanted, joking around, and just enjoying the independence at that age.

Of course, staying up late came with a price! We still had to wake up early the next day, ready for a full day of basketball. It was tough, but we were all in it together, and that made it fun. That sense of camaraderie and learning to balance freedom with responsibility are memories that stick with me even today.
