Exploring Life & Business with Momma Kai (Kara Lynn) Sanders of L.U.V. Enterprises Presents

Today we’d like to introduce you to Momma Kai (Kara Lynn) Sanders.

Hi Momma Kai (Kara Lynn), we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Greetings 👋🏾. It’s another amazing day in paradise 🤩. Thank you for this opportunity. I think the most important thing I’d like to start with is my given name and the name I use to introduce myself. My given name is Kara Lynn Sanders. About 2 years ago I resurrected a nickname I had been given over 15 years ago and now use as my super s-hero name.

That name is Momma Kai because I found my superpowers being the mom and student of a young Black male superhero (YBMS). The name God gave him is Wisdom and he is my heart beating outside of me.

I consider us Raleigh’s Most Famous Unhoused People since my YBMS and I have been living in our car for the last 2+ years yet I’ve gotten involved with as much as I can to learn how I can be an agent for positive change in the city of Raleigh.

I started speaking monthly at city council meetings in February of 2023. That led me to serve on the Joint Raleigh/Wake County Homelessness Task Force from May 2023 to January 2024. For the last 18 months I’ve attended as many city functions as possible and taken all the available city courses namely, Raleigh, Neighborhood College, Planning Academy and Citizens Leadership Academy.

In an effort to provide solutions to eliminate homelessness, I found there were more problems to be solved. All the problems seemed to exist because our country wasn’t founded on recognizing the infinite and intrusive value of every person. And then acting appropriately.

So I would say the brief continuation of my story is I’m on a journey with God to build a system of service that recognizes the infinite and intrinsic value of every person. That system will be built by community who support each other’s well-being and focuses on bringing awareness of brain development, nervous system regulation, trauma and nutrition through various initiatives that gather adults and children from a variety of backgrounds.

After finishing my training to become a parent coach in 2022 I was so in awe of what I learned I couldn’t help but share. Since then my expertise has grown and I’m committed to children and adults getting to a constant state of parasympathetic nervous system regulation otherwise known as rest and digest.

It’s been entirely because of the grace of God combined with kindness of strangers, old and new friends and family that Wisdom and I are alive, healthy and, dare I say, flourishing. We have such a beautiful story! We are at the beginning of something phenomenal. And it’s an exciting time to be alive.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Smooth road? Absolutely NOT 😭! Being without stable housing is challenging enough. Then when you encounter people who treat you as though you’re less than them or seem to hold something against you for being without an external home, it makes it infinitely harder to rise. As if the internal battle that wants to drown you isn’t enough to keep you down, people do try. The hardest days have been when I didn’t know what my young Black male superhero was going to eat and/or my nervous system was hard to regulate. Nevertheless, everyday I state, on as many occasions as possible, that “it’s another amazing day in paradise” because it is. The struggles never last and with a dedicated focus on keeping my nervous system regulated I’m able to overcome sooner than I anticipate.

We’ve been impressed with L.U.V. Enterprises Presents, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Thank you for asking. I’m honored to answer. I’m at the very beginning of a journey to launch L.U.V. Enterprises Presents, an “umbrella” management and investment company, looking to invest in people, businesses and properties.

L.U.V. has 3 meanings. The first as an acronym is “learn ur value”. The second is found in Scripture and is simply “God is Love”. And the third is my personal definition, compiled from a variety of sources. It states: Love is the opportunity, blessing and challenge of seeing God/Goddess in others, especially when they don’t see Him/Her/Them in themselves; honoring, reverencing and nurturing that divine within until it is manifest without!

Our motto is “Building the Village, Raising the Child”. Our mission is to move individuals and families from poverty to prosperity, internally and externally by keeping it Samaritan Style (K.I.S.S.) with Love, compassion and mercy (by dictionary definition, not personal interpretation). Samaritan Style is based on the parable of the Good Samaritan found in Like 10 (note: personally I call him the Exceptional Samaritan). In simplicity it means have compassion and meet the needs with investment and allies. I like to say “K.I.S.S. to uplift”.

With this as a foundation for services, I am in the pilot phase of launching the first business that will fall under L.U.V. and provide services directly to the community. The endeavor is called Emancipated Parenting. My first group parent coaching pilot launched about 3 weeks ago with 4 couples.

The purpose of our gatherings is to explore how brain development, nervous system regulation, trauma and nutrition intersect in who we become and how we behave. We’re seeking to develop more secure and peaceful relationships within so we can offer safety to our children. Another way to say that is “connect to respect and respect to connect”.

As a prerequisite to our gatherings, my parent allies are encouraged to keep a gratitude journal for at least 2 weeks before we get started. This helps our brains begin to change in a way that invites more positive thinking and a more positive outlook on our lives, our relationships and our children. Then we spend 12 weeks diving into the spiritual and scientific foundations of emancipated parenting.

This is the first endeavor in what I’m calling for in the Summer 2025, Emancipation Summer: A Summer of Epic Love. Love that begins with self, spreads itself broad and deep in the Black community and ends by encompassing all in the community. A summer that begs to be full of experiences that emancipate us from the triggers of our nervous systems that no longer serve us!

I don’t think many people are familiar with the word emancipate unless they know about the Emancipation Proclamation, the document that freed the slaves. While one definition of emancipate is freedom from slavery and bondage, the other definition is the legal separation of a child from their parents.

I combine the two to suggest that emancipation, in our day, is freeing our nervous systems from how they developed based on the ways our parents or primary caregivers raised us. Many of us are easily triggered by things as though we are being chased by a sabertooth tiger when the situations were are in are not that extreme.

Those reactions have caused dangerous and unnecessary consequences for so many people. Emancipated Parenting anticipates leading the way for adults to free themselves to live a liberated life according to their own terms, especially as a benefit to their children.

The goal is to go global and change the narrative for parents so children can grow up in safe, healthy home environments. It’s time to create better statistics for our children and parents. The work I’m launching is to lead our city to be the first to implement the Decade of the Child initiative. This unique focus I believe will lead us to be one of the 10 All-American City Award winners next year. Thanks again for the opportunity to answer these questions!

How do you think about luck?
I once heard that luck equals opportunity meeting preparation. I’ve experienced that before. But I would say I’ve been subject to miracles more than luck, things that happen out of the ordinary, totally unexpected.

Then again… in some ways, it is related to what I originally said. Except that maybe the only preparation was me showing up, just being there when the opportunity was presented. If I look at it that way, then luck has played a HUGE role in my life. Luck or miracles, whatever you call it, I’ve been tremendously blessed with both.
