There is a great need for books about African American girls believing in themselves created by authors of African American descent. Sister Girl Publishing was established to give back to our community and offer a fun and educational avenue for children to imagine and explore the world. The books are engaging stories that help develop the reader and provide a true-life lesson. In each book, the main character, Sister Girl, learns that she must be patient and resilient to achieve her goals. These are lessons that our children need to identify and practice.

Sister Girl Publishing wants children to read the books and to know that their goals are attainable with dedication and perseverance. It is essential to our future as a nation and community for our children to be empowered to read, and especially by their families. Sister Girl Publishing recognizes the need for early childhood literature and therefore creates inspiring books that encourage children to believe in themselves and to have high self-esteem through a character that looks like them.

The Child and Family policy center stated that reading proficiently by the end of 3rd grade is a strong indicator of early education, health, social success, and high school graduation. Sister Girl Publishing’s goal of providing educational resources such as books, journals, and motivational coloring books is to offer children developmental and educational resources. These inspiring educational tools utilize vibrant illustrations and engaging storylines to leave the reader inspired and looking to read the next book.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The lessons that I have learned along the way are one, your voice matters, two, Create, Create, Create because it is needed; three, self-doubt does nothing but sabotage your goals; and four, trust the process.

Sister Girl Publishing recognizes the need for early childhood literature and therefore creates inspiring books that encourage children to believe in themselves and to have high self-esteem through a character that looks like them.

My goal as an author is to combat generational illiteracy globally, but we must first start in our communities. I am most excited about sharing my books with children and seeing the smiles on their faces. It makes my heart smile when I’m in the community sharing the books, and a little girl looks at the character and says, “Mom, Sister Girl looks like me.” I never knew that I could be so impactful, and that is what makes me proud. I am excited to share the adventures of Sister Girl globally. We are working on the Sister Girl doll, more stories, and I know the children will love it.

Sister Girl Publishing understands the correlation between children having high and low reading test scores. It stems back to if the child was exposed to resources that allowed them to improve and accelerate their reading abilities at an early age. With this in mind, we decided to create educational resources and make them available to the public. Our goal is to create engaging stories that enable the reader to build confidence in themselves and their reading abilities.
