Hi Phil, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
ProActive Pool Solutions began long before the company existed—back when I was a server at Ruby Tuesday in New York, where I met Patrick. Even then, our conversations were about more than just work. We were driven, growth-minded, and looking to create something meaningful.

When I moved to North Carolina and entered the pool industry, I started noticing major inefficiencies. Many companies were following outdated practices built for climates like Southern California, not for the unpredictable weather here. These standards caused unnecessary damage and frustration for pool owners. I saw an opportunity to build something better: a proactive, client-focused company grounded in quality and care.

Pat had the capital and the courage to make it real. Together, we launched ProActive Pool Solutions.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting our own business was anything but easy. When I told my current employer about my plan to start something on my own, I was immediately fired. I suddenly found myself with no job, a family to support, and $15,000 in a business account. So, I hit the ground running. I quickly began getting insured, buying equipment, and knocking on over a thousand doors in three weeks. By the end of that first month, we had our first clients and a glimpse of what was possible.

Those early months were a grind. Every dollar was stretched and every decision was critical. But this built the foundation for what ProActive is today: a company built on efficiency, discipline, and relentless effort. Our name came from our approach. We don’t wait for things to break; we prevent problems before they start. Following proper maintenance and water chemistry not only protects equipment but helps homeowners truly enjoy their pools.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
When I first started, my goal was simple: replace my income, and support my family. But as we grew, the vision expanded. I wanted to create a company that develops people, not just services pools. We want this to be a place where employees become capable, confident problem-solvers in work and life.

I learned early that experience isn’t everything. Teaching new technicians with no bad habits often beats trying to retrain old ones. At ProActive, we make it clear from day one: we do things differently. We don’t settle for the industry standard; we set a new one.

This company reflects my own journey from coasting on natural talent to realizing that success demands discipline, ownership, and hard work. That’s the mindset we bring to every job and the culture we build in our team.
