Exploring Life & Business with Sanjay Das of Always Best Care Senior Services of South Wake & Johnston County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sanjay Das.

Hi Sanjay, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
After 22 years in software development and management, I wanted to do something impactful that I could do for the rest of my life. My grandmother had raised me since I was born. Her contributions to society were multifold: she had founded a women’s cooperative in the 1950s’ when women’s lib was unheard of in the mountains of India; they taught women how to knit, sew, use a loom, and become financially independent, ran a school for underprivileged children, while doing community development and volunteer work. She did all this while raising her own family, which included a disabled daughter, and supporting her physician husband to start his private practice. She was a composer, singer, and songwriter and played multiple musical instruments. As a tribute to her and to continue her legacy, I started Kalyani Senior Services dba/Always Best Care Senior Services. My mission is to create certainty and hope in the lives of seniors and their families. We started by providing private duty non-medical care and helping families find a suitable living arrangement when their family members couldn’t live at home. We have since transitioned to being an employee-focused senior services agency. In addition to our initial services, we now provide light medical care and aging life consultation.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been an easy road. I had to learn how to market and run a business, both radically new concepts for me (I am the first in my family to start and run a business). I was new to this industry, so I had to learn fast and continue daily. The industry has changed during the 8+ years we have been in business. Tons of new businesses have started, and service demand has grown exponentially. Still, the number of qualified individuals available to meet the demand has not kept up with caregiver turnover rates in the 60-80% range. This trend is across the entire senior care industry, including in-home care, independent living, assisted living, memory care, family care homes, continuing care communities, rehabilitation, and nursing homes. The pandemic and associated issues have stressed this industry even more. Employee wages and care costs have skyrocketed, negatively impacting caregiver consistency and quality of care.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are an employee-focused and employee-driven organization dedicated to serving each other and our clients’ needs. Our culture statement captures this dynamic best: “We foster a trusting environment for our entire Always Best Care family to improve the quality of people’s lives. Our exceptional, experienced, and valued care comforts and uplifts those navigating the dementia journey.

Our vision:
* Employer of Choice
* Provider of Choice
* Community Leader in dementia care & “infrastructure.”

Our specialty is caring for those who are navigating the dementia journey. Our strong belief is that if we take care of our employees and put them first, our clients will automatically experience the excellent care and engagement they want and deserve. Always helping; Always there; Always magical dementia care!

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Our organization is an inverted pyramid, with the CEO at the bottom, holding the vision on which the agency is built; he enables, empowers, and supports our leadership team. We are constantly learning and improving how we do what we do to take care of our employees and clients. They, in turn, do the same for our care team, including Care Assistants, Senior Care Assistants, and Case Managers. The title Care Assistant adds professionalism and respect that each care team deserves as they engage and care for our clients and look out for each other.
