Hi Sonia , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
For more than 27 years, education was the driving force in my life, a calling that shaped not only my career but who I am at my core. From a young age, learning didn’t come easily. I was consciously aware of my challenges as a student, and those early struggles became the foundation of my commitment to ensuring children learned to their highest potential. I dreamed of becoming the kind of teacher who patiently nurtured every student, empowering them to grasp, understand, and apply new skills with confidence.
My journey began in the classroom, where I quickly realized my aspirations reached beyond my initial role. After just three years of teaching, I entered my school district’s competitive reading coach institute. There, I discovered strategies to help students master reading, transforming not only their academic performance, but also my own sense of fulfillment. Witnessing my students’ growth as readers fueled a newfound passion for coaching and leadership.
With my toolkit of reading strategies, I soon transitioned into a reading coach role, guiding fellow teachers in crafting dynamic, effective literacy instruction. This opportunity allowed me to influence not just individual students, but entire classrooms, building stronger, more vibrant learning communities along the way.
My commitment to educational leadership grew stronger. I pursued a master’s degree in school administration, followed immediately by enrollment in a doctorate program focused on organizational leadership and human development. Stepping into the role of elementary school administrator, I realized the profound impact I could have on shaping the learning culture among both teachers and students. I firmly believed that effective teachers created optimal learning environments, and as an administrator, I worked to implement policies and practices that fostered excellence at every level.
Yet, school leadership came with its own set of challenges. Every day brought new demands, often requiring quick thinking and resilience amid the chaos of a bustling school environment. Despite the pressures, my sense of purpose remained steadfast until, gradually, I noticed the joy and passion that once fueled me being overshadowed. I began to yearn for something more to leverage my experiences and skills in a new context.
After publishing my book, “Teach Like a Boss, Through a Spiritual Lens,” I needed professional headshots, which led me to a casual meeting with a branding coach. Our conversation took an unexpected turn when she asked about my work; as I described my journey in teacher coaching and leadership development, she saw in me the potential for something greater. A week later, she called to ask if I had ever considered becoming a personal development coach. After thoughtful reflection and prayer, I embraced the opportunity with a sense of peace and excitement.
Today, I channel my passion for growth and empowerment into coaching individuals, groups, nonprofit boards, and organizations. My work now spans personal/executive coaching and professional development across a variety of leadership topics, from strategic planning to time management. The classroom may look different, but my purpose remains unchanged: to inspire, equip, and lead others to reach their fullest potential.
My journey is proof that reinvention is possible at any stage of life. By embracing new challenges and listening to the quiet call for change, I’ve discovered that the heart of education beats far beyond the walls of a school and that the chance to make a difference is always within reach.
In 2024, I founded the BobbiMac Seed Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to nurturing the mental well-being of children ages 13 to 18. Our mission is to provide essential mental health support, including assistance with copays, access to therapy sessions, and opportunities for character and leadership development. The BobbiMac team collaborates with other organizations that serve young people and their families, offering comprehensive family workshops to support holistic growth. Through BobbiMac, I can continue my passion for helping children thrive and reach their fullest potential.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Like many entrepreneurs, my journey was not without its challenges. Although I was excited to step into the world of running my own business, I quickly realized that building it required more than just transferable skills. To boost my confidence, I attended personal growth coaching summits and immersed myself in books about coaching others outside of education and developing programs that would attract potential clients. Despite my efforts, after several months, I found myself feeling discouraged and questioning whether I had made the right decision, because I wasn’t booking clients right away.
