Today we’d like to introduce you to Caleb Farrell.
Hi Caleb, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve always loved filmmaking and visual effects. Even as a kid, around seven years old, I was borrowing my mom’s camera to make little home movies. I also spent hours in Microsoft Paint drawing creatures, characters, and energy blasts, then layering them onto photos to create slideshow animations. At the time, I didn’t even realize I was experimenting with VFX. I just loved bringing my imagination to life! My dad and I had regular movie nights, watching everything from action films to classic Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan movies, which sparked my interest in cinematic storytelling and fight choreography. I loved showing my work to friends at school, I put my projects on flash drives so I could plug them into any computer and share what I made. Eventually I started posting videos online! Vine was the first platform where I gained traction, and after it shut down, I moved to Instagram. There I collaborated with a number of popular creators, which helped grow my audience from around 1,000 followers to nearly 10,000!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was definitely hard and still is to maintain, I do visual effects and filmmaking so It takes time to make each piece and in todays world where everything moves so fast its hard to keep up. I’ve had years where I felt like I was at the top and years where it felt impossible to climb back up. But no matter what I just know I have to keep moving forward!
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I create short films and also commentary on film. I’ve always loved it and I’m grateful to be in the position am today and I hope to grow more! I’m know for a lot of things but I would say in my first era of seeing a glimpse success… I was about 16 or 17 and I company called “comedy.com” picked up video I created of Mary J Blige dancing on stage with a lightsaber that got over 11 million views and even got a reaction out of Mary J Blige herself! I also created a trend where me and my friend Nas would see funny CGI dancing cats and those went viral for a few years being posted by celebrities and huge pages all over. I eventually got to direct Ashanti for her BET award which was huge for me because I was only 21. My next well known projects came from a little live action anime series that I created, where I would take small everyday objects or situations and amp them up by 1000% and have insane fight scenes in my living room which amassed millions, around 20 million+ on all platforms. I’m now making my own original films on YouTube with higher quality CGI that’s doing pretty well. My latest got around 300,000+ so far and I only started a few months ago so I’m excited to see the growth!
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I’d say just make great work, work that you’re proud of and you can sit back and watch! Be yourself to the fullest because every project I created that went viral was me just being myself. sometimes i would watch it and say… “Man I’m crazy” or “I cant believe I’m posting this” because Its outside my comfort zone to share sometimes. But i know its good especially with the VFX so I post it anyways because that’s me being my true self. Once you realize that you can be yourself in public you’ll realize there’s other people just like you that will enjoy it.
