Today we’d like to introduce you to Casey Mozingo.
Hi Casey, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I began my photography journey as a newspaper intern when I was in high school (2000) and continued through college, graduating from Barton College (2005). After exploring a few other avenues (including teaching, advertising, and retail), I found myself back in photojournalism. After seven years at my local newspaper and opportunity came open for me at Wayne Community College.
Fast forward through learning video editing and social media management, I started my own marketing business and I have been pursuing that full-time since February of 2023.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Although I feel like the road has been fairly smooth, there’s always bumps. Everything from a small bump like a client’s response being delayed to big bumps like a delay in payment because of an accounting error or business being so slow you aren’t able to pay yourself, there’s always something that will happen to make entrepreneurship the road less traveled.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Big Blue Couch Media?
I started my marketing firm, Big Blue Couch Media, as a way to help local businesses and organizations who were in need of professional marketing assistance, but couldn’t hire a full-time employee. I found that a lot of places have a high turnover rate in that area because it’s usually an employee’s second or third responsibility and they move on to a different place of employment.
Although I’m known most in my community for my photography, I’ve seen a large uptick in requests for videos and websites. I feel like people are finally seeing the importance of having a presence online in a variety of places. They can no longer fight platforms out of principle because of their personal opinions.
When I first started this journey I imagined retail businesses would be my largest number of clients, but I absolutely love that I’m able to work with so many non-profits to reach people who need their help, share their stories, and even influence potential donors.
How do you define success?
A lot of people define success in how much money they make, how many awards they win, or how many people know them, but I see my success being the number of people that have been able to help.
