Hidden Gems: Meet Damion and Karen Posey of Right Meow Cat Cafe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Damion and Karen Posey.

Hi, Damion and Karen. We are so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Post Covid, we were looking to create something positive for our community by combining the things we love and felt passionate about. As huge animal lovers, we were instantly attracted to the idea of a cat cafe with a mission to save at-risk cats in our community which has a growing population of stray and unwanted animals. As first-time business owners, we were not sure what to expect. We felt strongly we wanted to be hands-on with the cat’s care and the daily running of the cafe. To do so, we knew we needed to bring more to the table to keep our doors open for the long run. We felt that boba tea, coffee, and a cheerfully funky hang out space were the perfect pairings to enjoy in the company of feline friends. We were very happy to see our customers agree.

Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
We have had much to learn about starting a small business, making boba, and cat rescue. Still, we have enjoyed growing, learning, and celebrating our successes as a family. Our biggest struggle is finding creative ways to accommodate our growth. We always wish we had a bigger cafe space, kitchen, and parking area.

Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are a unique boba tea/coffee shop on a mission to help save cats in our community. Customers can stop by any time during regular hours for a delicious drink, which helps to keep our doors open and continues our mission. For an additional entry fee, customers can book a cat therapy session to sit in our cat rooms in the company of numerous rescue cats from our partner, Facilitate Rescue. Most of these cats have been pulled from local shelters or difficult situations in the community. We call this time “cat therapy” for two reasons. Customers find this time spent with rescue cats unique, relaxing, and enjoyable. We also find that cat’s benefit from the additional socialization and love they receive from our customers. We are honored to be a part of these cat’s transformations. We have been open for 9 months and are very proud of our 102 adoptions.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson we have learned is to be flexible with our plans, ourselves, and each other.
