Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniella Melillo.
Hi Daniella, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey into photography started when I was just 7 years old. What began as a childhood hobby quickly became something I couldn’t imagine my life without. For the past 20 years, I’ve always had a camera in my hands, capturing family, friends, everyday moments, and eventually special milestones. I didn’t know it then, but those early years were laying the foundation for the business I have today.
After years of learning, practicing, and falling even more in love with the art of storytelling through photographs, I officially launched my photography business in 2022. Turning a lifelong passion into a career was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
Since my last Voyage Raleigh feature, my life has changed in ways I never expected. I welcomed my son, became a single mother, and moved back closer to my hometown to be surrounded by family and a strong support system. Those experiences have given me an even deeper appreciation for the moments that photographs preserve. As a mother, I understand just how quickly life changes and how priceless those memories become.
Today, I’m balancing motherhood with a career that’s been 20 years in the making. Every session is an opportunity to preserve someone’s story, and that’s what continues to inspire me every single day.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like many small business owners, I’ve experienced seasons where life had to come before my career. Becoming a first-time mom was one of those moments. Shortly after my son was born, he experienced some medical issues that required my full attention. Naturally, my business took a step back while I focused on being there for him. Thankfully, he outgrew those challenges after he turned one, and I’ve been able to pour my energy back into growing my business.
I’ve also had to rebuild my business more than once. After moving over two hours away from my hometown, many of my clients found photographers closer to them, and I had to start from scratch in a community where I didn’t know anyone. Building trust and a client base in a brand-new area was challenging, but it taught me perseverance and pushed me to grow both personally and professionally.
Now that I’ve moved back closer to my hometown, I’m rebuilding once again. When I first started, there were only a handful of photographers in the area. After being gone for four years, the photography community has grown tremendously, so it’s a much more competitive market than it used to be. While that can be intimidating, I choose to see it as motivation. Every challenge has made me stronger, helped me refine my style, and reminded me that staying authentic and creating a great client experience will always set me apart.
One of my proudest moments came last year when I hosted my biggest Christmas mini sessions to date. It was a reminder that even after setbacks, hard work and consistency really do pay off.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I specialize in lifestyle photography because I believe the most meaningful images are the ones that feel real. Whether it’s a growing family, a maternity session, a couple in love, or simply documenting a season of life, my goal is to capture genuine connection and authentic emotion rather than perfectly posed moments.
What truly sets me apart is my heart behind the camera. I understand that not everyone has the budget for professional photography, but that doesn’t make their memories any less important. I’ve been in that position myself, and I never want finances to be the reason someone misses out on preserving a once-in-a-lifetime moment. That’s why, a few times each year, I offer “Pay What You Can” sessions for a limited time. Whether someone is welcoming a rainbow baby after years of infertility, documenting precious time with a loved one who is nearing the end of their life, celebrating a long-awaited milestone, or simply wanting family photos they otherwise couldn’t afford, I want photography to be accessible when it matters most.
I’m most proud that my brand has become about so much more than beautiful photos. I want every person who steps in front of my camera to feel comfortable, valued, and seen. My goal is to create an experience where people can simply be themselves, knowing they’ll leave with images that tell their story honestly.
At the end of the day, I don’t just want to deliver a gallery—I want to preserve memories that families will treasure for generations. If people remember my business for anything, I hope it’s that I cared about them just as much as I cared about the photographs I created for them.
How do you think about happiness?
Without a doubt, my son. Becoming his mom has completely changed my perspective on life. He reminds me to slow down, appreciate the little moments, and find joy in things that often go unnoticed. Watching him grow has also deepened my love for photography because I see firsthand how quickly time passes. Every milestone, every laugh, and every ordinary day becomes a memory before you know it. He’s my biggest motivation—not only to be a better photographer but to build a life and business that he can one day be proud of.
