Hidden Gems: Meet David Williams of Sunset Market Gardens LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Williams.

Hi David, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Our journey to farming began in 2012. My family was seeking healing through food, due to some health concerns. So we started growing a nice sized garden in our backyard at our old house. This led us to visit multiple, local vegetable farms in our area. And one stood out to us. It was a farm that included beautiful landscaping into their farming, which spoke to us. My professional background is in fine gardening, so it resonated with me. The farming bug had bit me. So we started a 2 year search for the best possible spot to build a home and farm. In late 2015, we moved into our new home and started to build our farm in 2016. Spring of 2017, we actually harvested and started selling our first vegetables at a local farmers market. We did this for 3 seasons. In the fall of 2018, we opened our farm store on-premise, where we sold our produce and other local vendors’ items as well. Since spring of 2020, our store has been our only sales outlet.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting any business is hard and farming is no exception. For us, learning to grow on the fly and trying to sell to families took some time and effort. Selling food to families is relationship building. And our growth as farmers and our business have seemed to move upward at the same pace. The biggest challenge is the financial side of farming. Marketing and trying to be profitable are the biggest challenges. Also trying to manage balance in work and family life.
