Today we’d like to introduce you to Denzel Fleming.
Hi Denzel, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
See, I’m originally from Kinston, NC although, most times, people associate me with being from Greensboro, NC. That’s where I planted my feet. Growing up, I was involved in the arts; either at the Boys and Girls Club or Jack Amyette Recreation Center in Jacksonville, NC. As you can imagine by now I’ve been all over North Carolina with roots in Eastern North Carolina. Nowadays, when people ask where I’m from I tell them North Carolina (with a smile). There are people from all over who call North Carolina home now, you know? I guess that’s the impact we have on people.
I’ve been creating community with arts at the center. It’s almost as if that’s the language everyone speaks. The language of appreciation communicated through expressions on our choices of mediums. I started as a writer– a poet– winning contests as early as 8 years old while participating in civic oration events. As I grew, so did my affinity with words. What interested me most in middle school were analogies, metaphors, and similes. They call it Language Arts.
As I matured, so did the nature of what I thought about. Therefore, my material started to sound different. I was talking more about love– being in an all-encompassing sense, not just romantic. You know? Platonic, fraternal, communal, agape. Holistic love…
So, the person I am today is one promoting love throughout North Carolina with art as a means to go about doing so.
Granted, I could’ve told you about my experience at North Carolina A&T State University, graduating with a Marketing degree; but I figured I’d give you something fresh.
I plan on doing more speaking engagements and teaching virtual business classes for those looking to learn how to start their own and be a content creator. Basically, if you want to get paid how to be yourself… I know how to teach you how to do that. It’s what I’ve been doing my entire life. I want to keep doing the same thing for my son, Isaiah, too. I think he’s going to be a great him.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Has it been a smooth road? Ha. Man, we’re in North Carolina where some roads are dirt and some are paved for easy riding. That’s one way to put it. I’ve had struggles along the way, for sure. I think my biggest struggle was determining what I want to be known for and not what others know me for. I’ve determined it to be education.
Speaking of which, in grade school, I would get Honor Roll and Principal’s List often. I was actually a part of the Academically Gifted Program. They call it AIG now. As time went on, I would struggle with maintaining focus until I learned how to journal and what to include in my journal.
Yeah, there are more struggles I could share with you, but they are shadowed by successes.
We’ve been impressed with Pixel Pushas, LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Pixel Pushas, LLC started as a marketing company to manage my personal endeavors as an artist which would help me qualify for certain opportunities. Now, it’s evolving to a management company for others– project management. I still manage marketing contracts. I’m proud of the fact that I’ve found a rhythm for the business. I’ve worked on campaigns recruiting for schools, fundraising campaigns for major non-profits, photographed for major labels… the list goes on.
I want my readers to know they can do it too and I can teach them how to do it. That’s something I’ve included on my website now. Consider me the go-to consultant for all things marketing and strategy. What does that look like to the everyday person? It looks like helping them get started and/or maintaining what they already have. What does it look like on an enterprise level? It looks like education and professional development.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Oh yes! Find a mentor. The advice I have on finding a mentor is to find someone whose work you admire and reach out to them. More than likely, they will be open to you being their understudy. You just have to be willing to be an understudy and be a student. You will see your mentor in multiple seasons. How they handle those seasons will let you know what to do along with what they tell you about their experience. What worked well are these three things: look, listen and learn. My mama taught me that.
