Hidden Gems: Meet Dr. Jackie Flowers of Flower’s Solution-Focused Therapy, PLLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Jackie Flowers.

Hi Dr. Jackie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey into psychology began with a deep curiosity about people—how they think, feel, and grow through challenges. Early on, I was drawn to the resilience that individuals show when given space, understanding, and practical tools to make change. That curiosity eventually evolved into a passion for helping people heal and thrive through solution-focused and evidence-based approaches.

After earning my Ph.D. in School Psychology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2018, I worked as a Clinical Associate at the Duke Center for Autism and Brain Development for 5 years on various clinical research studies and in the neuropsychology clinic. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I saw a need, had some extra time, and ultimately founded Flowers Solution-Focused Therapy, PLLC, where I’ve had the privilege of providing therapy and conducting psychological evaluations for children, adolescents, and adults. Over time, my work has centered on helping clients and families better understand themselves—whether through diagnostic clarity, emotional support, or strategies that foster everyday success.

What’s guided me throughout my career is a belief in empowerment and collaboration. I’ve learned that meaningful change often begins with small, intentional steps—and that growth happens when clients feel seen, respected, and capable. Each stage of my professional journey has deepened my appreciation for the balance between science and compassion in clinical practice, and it continues to shape the way I show up as both a clinician and a lifelong learner. At Flowers Solution-Focused Therapy, we now have a team of 3 administrators, 4 clinicians, and interns who are giving back to our community through their work.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the biggest challenges private practice owners face is navigating ethical and legal guidelines. Managing both clinical and administrative responsibilities can feel overwhelming, from maintaining compliance with professional standards to keeping accurate records, handling billing, and protecting client confidentiality. Many clinicians enter private practice because they are passionate about helping people—not because they’ve been trained to run a business—which makes the fear of unintentional mistakes very real.

Financial pressures are another significant challenge. From insurance claim rejections and high office rent to ensuring employees are paid on time, the operational side of practice can be stressful. Add in managing space, scheduling, clinician caseloads, and hiring, and it becomes clear how complex running a practice can be.

Perhaps the biggest gap is that graduate programs rarely prepare clinicians for the business side of practice. Navigating these challenges successfully requires mentorship, strong professional networks, and clear systems that support ethical, legal, and financial responsibilities. With these in place, clinicians can focus on what matters most: providing high-quality, compassionate care to their clients.
