Hidden Gems: Meet Fernando of GARDENBORO LANDSCAPING

Today we’d like to introduce you to Fernando.

Fernando, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born in Cuba, and my passion for plants and gardens has been part of me since childhood. I grew up in a farming family, surrounded by agriculture and engineering. In 2017, I graduated as an Agronomical Engineer in Cuba, completing my studies in agricultural sciences and biology.

I arrived in the United States in April 2023, and from the first moment, I knew what I wanted. I didn’t have time to start over with new studies — instead, I decided to transfer my knowledge into a profession and business that connected with my background and passion. That’s how Gardenboro Landscaping was born.

It has been a very self-taught journey. Every step — from registering the business to designing the website and learning how to operate — I’ve done personally. The beginning was extremely challenging: finding capital to buy equipment, understanding how the leads and clients work, and learning to sell my services in English.

North Carolina has been very welcoming to me. My clients have given me not just jobs but trust, friendship, and opportunities to show my work. From day one, I’ve had a clear vision and detailed business plans — I’m simply building each part step by step.

Today, we offer a full range of landscaping, lawn care, gardening, and small handyman services. The short-term future looks very promising: I want to continue growing personally and professionally until I become a licensed landscaping or general contractor.

This journey has taught me a lot — especially about family unity, perseverance, and faith. None of this would have been possible without my family’s support. I’ve learned that every goal has its time, as long as you never lose sight of it. With constancy, passion, and faith, everything is possible.

Every garden tells a story — just like every person. Gardenboro Landscaping is a big part of mine: the story of a Cuban who decided to build new roots in a beautiful land like North Carolina, USA.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The biggest challenge I faced was adapting to a new country, learning a different language, and starting a business completely from scratch. I didn’t have a guide — I had to learn everything on my own: marketing, estimating, customer service, and how to earn trust within a new community.

There were moments when progress was slow, but I learned to stay patient and consistent. Every small project, every client, and even every mistake became part of my education.

I also realized that running a business is not just about making money — it’s about building relationships, keeping strong values, and having a clear purpose. My goal has always been to provide honest work and high-quality service, and that philosophy has helped Gardenboro Landscaping grow steadily.

The most important lesson I’ve learned is that success takes time, but it always comes when you stay faithful, disciplined, and passionate about what you do.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Gardenboro Landscaping is a local business based in Asheboro, North Carolina. We specialize in garden maintenance, mulch installation, stone pathways, property cleanups, lawn care, small concrete projects, and general landscaping services.

What sets us apart is the personal dedication we put into every project. Each job is completed with attention to detail, professionalism, and a deep respect for our clients’ spaces. We focus on creating and maintaining outdoor areas that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing, while also promoting sustainability.

Our goal is not just to provide a service, but to transform outdoor spaces and build lasting trust with each client. Most of our new projects come from referrals, which reflects the quality and commitment that define us.

I am very proud of our brand because Gardenboro Landscaping represents hard work, faith, and a passion for creating natural beauty. We want readers to know that when they hire us, they’re not just getting landscaping services — they’re getting a personalized experience delivered with heart and professionalism.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Over the next 5 to 10 years, I see the landscaping industry moving toward more sustainable and eco-friendly solutions. Clients are increasingly looking for gardens that are water-efficient, environmentally responsible, and easy to maintain.

I also believe that technology will play a bigger role: smart irrigation systems, digital tools for garden design, and platforms that connect clients with services more efficiently.

Another trend I foresee is a greater focus on personalization and customer experience. Landscaping is no longer just about maintaining a yard; clients want outdoor spaces that reflect their lifestyle and personality.

Finally, the professionalization and education of the industry will continue to grow. Successful entrepreneurs will need to combine technical knowledge, customer service, and business skills to stand out in an increasingly competitive market.
