Hidden Gems: Meet Janelle Brienzi of Life Path Legal (a dba of Brienzi Law Offices, PLLC)

Today we’d like to introduce you to Janelle Brienzi.

Hi Janelle, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Since I was 16 years old, I knew I wanted to work in some way to advocate for victims of domestic violence. After my own harrowing experience, the attorney who helped me through that unimaginable court process at that young age became my hero. I wanted to be someone like him who took the time, had the patience, and could make people in situations like mine finally feel like someone was there to protect them. After volunteering and working with several domestic violence agencies during college and after, I decided on law school. During that time, I realized the need for strong, compassionate advocates for families at all stages – dating relationships, child custody matters, divorces, adoptions, and estate planning. My goal is to provide support to people and families during all these critical paths in their lives when they come to my office at a crossroad. When a client first reaches out to me, they are often standing at the intersection of who they were and who they’re about to become. Their marriage is ending. They’re fighting for their children. They’re untangling a life they built with someone they once loved. They are trying to plan a safe escape from violence. And they’re terrified. What drew me to this work—and what keeps me here after sixteen years—is the profound privilege of guiding people through that transformation.
Family law isn’t about winning arguments or crushing opponents. It’s about helping a parent secure stability for his or her children. It’s about protecting someone whose partner has turned their shared life into a weapon. It’s about ensuring that when the dust settles, my client isn’t just surviving—they’re positioned to genuinely thrive.
I’ve watched people discover strength they didn’t know they had. I’ve seen parents create healthy co-parenting relationships that serve their children beautifully, even when the marriage couldn’t be saved. I’ve helped clients reclaim their financial independence, their sense of safety, their hope for the future. I’ve helped families connect through adoption and have given people the piece of mind that their family will be protected when they pass away.
The law gives me the tools. But the real work is helping people remember who they are when everything feels like it’s falling apart. It’s translating complex legal processes into clear paths forward. It’s combining advocacy with empathy, strategy with compassion.
I do this work because families deserve an attorney who sees them as whole person, not just a case file. Because children deserve parents who can navigate divorce without destroying each other. Because everyone going through the worst chapter of their life deserves someone in their corner who believes in their next chapter.
That’s why I built Life Path Legal. Because the end of something significant should also be the beginning of something better—and I get to help make that possible.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
After many years of a successful law partnership, I began to stop seeing the big picture of “why” I do what I chose to do as my profession, and struggled to reconcile my core values with those of others. Ultimately I made the decision to start Life Path Legal and bring myself back to the “why”. With a smaller team of people, we are able to focus more on each individual client in the way that drove me to the profession to begin with. The path hasn’t always been smooth, but I feel like I am on the right one.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are a small law firm with a physical office in Cary, NC, but we have clients all over the triangle and surrounding areas. We focus on all aspects of family law, including domestic violence issues, divorce, child custody and child support, spousal support, equitable distribution, adoptions, name changes, and basic estate planning. We strive to be someone people can turn to at any crossroads in their life – from the most amicable situations in which agreements can be made outside of the courtroom to high conflict litigation. We try to make the process as smooth as possible for our clients and to be the team of people that someone feels comfortable with and doesn’t have the question of whether or not their best interests are being looked after.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Accountability. By far, every member of our team holds themselves accountable for making sure that each case that comes through our door is handled appropriately. It’s also important to reiterate to all our clients that accountability exists for their actions as well throughout their entire case. If each person holds themselves accountable for their actions and sees the consequences as their choice, rather than something that’s happened “to” them, that’s a huge step forward during these difficult life transitions. We strive to instill that value in everyone we work with, and within ourselves.
