Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Vines
Hi Jessica, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started The Beauty Bar in 2014 during a bout of homelessness and despair. While browsing Instagram one day, I saw an immensely successful beauty business owner speaking about her journey in the beauty industry. I was so inspired and awe-struck, that I drove to Atlanta to meet with her to gain some pointers. That conversation with her ignited a flame in me to turn my situation around. I purchased a lash kit from her and taught myself to do lash extensions. I started advertising online to get my name out there and started gaining traction as a reputable Lash Artist. I enrolled in the esthetics program at Aveda Chapel Hill to earn my licensure and opened a private spa in an office building, expanding my services.
After a few years of grinding, I opened my dream storefront location, employing 4 esthesticians and offering training in lashes, microblading, ombre brows and more! It really was a dream come true!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The grind to reach the pinnacle of my beauty career (opening my storefront) was not a small feat. I worked constantly, 7 days a week, with my small daughter in tow. There were not a lot of obstacles to overcome during that time as once I was a recognizable lash artist, the clients and money flowed. I was able to bring in between $10k-12k monthly. I was able to purchase a home, enroll my daughter in private school, and finally have a savings!
The real challenges came once I opened the storefront and employed others. As any beauty professional will tell you, employee turnover is extremely high in the beauty industry! Not to mention, I opened this storefront, about a year before Covid! Covid upended my business due to the employee turnover, clients afraid to be in such close contact as well as a few other things. After working in the storefront by myself for a year, I made the tough decision to close the storefront and move back to a salon suite. From there, I have been able to restructure my business, rebuild my clientele as well as continue to offer the beauty trainings!
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The Beauty Bar?
The Beauty Bar is a local esthetics spa specializing in lash extensions, microblading, ombre brows, lip blush, lash lifts and brow laminations. I also offer training services teaching upcoming lash/brow artists the same skills and techniques that have made me successful.
I believe my passion and love for my clients sets me apart from other beauty professionals. I truly love what I do. Connecting with other women and being able to pour into them through conversation, servicing them, or just giving them space to be themselves, brings me so much joy!
I am most proud of the community I have built. My clients have turned into friends and family. I love that for US!
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Passion is the most important characteristic of my success! You have to have passion to energize and fuel you when you are discouraged and feeling low. I could have viewed closing my storefront as a failure however I know my skillset is a gift and is valuable no matter what location I am in. I was able to use that passion to push me forward to continue operating my business on a smaller scale. I don’t know what is next on my beauty journey but I do know by restructuring my business, I will be ready!
