Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie and Jon Hamm.
Hi Julie and Jon, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Jon and I absolutely love dogs! When we got together we talked about getting a dog and I was opposed to small dogs but Jon really liked French Bulldogs and convinced me that they are small but they have big dog personalities. So, we got our first French Bulldog in 2019. We got her with the intent to breed her to see if it was something we would enjoy. Fast forward to winter 2021. Talula is ready to be bred! We worked with another local breeder to use one of their studs for Talula’s first litter and BAM! Puppies were born December 13, 2021! We had done research on what to expect, asked a lot of questions and made it through the first litter successfully. We learned that we absolutely loved the process! Within a few months, we purchased some more dogs in order to grow our program. Talula has had 2 litters and we are expecting a litter from our girl Dahlia Winters this Christmas. We have a couple of boys who have started working as studs. One of our boys, Papi Chulo, will have a litter born soon and we are waiting to see if Dahlia takes to confirm our boy Doctor Bojangles. The past year has been a whirlwind to say the least! We have learned so much and continue to learn every day and with every litter. We would not be where we are now if it weren’t for all the amazing breeders we have met who have become friends and who always help us out when we ask. This is a 24/7, 365 business. We love all of our dogs. They are family first and working dogs second and that is how we raise our pups. We aim to produce healthy French Bulldogs with good structure and nice temperaments.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We would say it has been pretty smooth. Of course, there have been struggles, any new business encounters that. Like figuring out taxes for an LLC that is a Partnership, or the best ways to market our puppies, even how we structure our contracts. The dogs have been the simplest part of all of it. Honestly, the most difficult part of the dogs is the poops! Most of the challenges we have faced we are able to reach out to people who have more experience than us. This really is a business of relationships. When it comes to puppies, we learned quickly that there is a lot of work involved in caring for newborn French Bulldogs. There were definitely some anxious moments during the litter that any breeder faces because we are dealing with live animals.
We’ve been impressed with J & J Frenchies LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are French Bulldog breeders in Apex, NC. We started breeding in 2021 and we are known for producing sweet, loving dogs with good structure. We work with breeders in the US, Canada, and the UK in order to introduce new bloodlines and to strengthen the breed. We are most proud of the puppies we have produced. It is always nice to hear from clients that their vets say their pups look really good and healthy. That is what we want to put out there and we are! We also have a shop that sells shirts, mugs, pillows, blankets, backpacks, etc., at frenchieswag1.com. We want people to know that we love our dogs, we pride ourselves on having well-socialized dogs who just want to love their new families.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Since we began this venture during COVID, we learned how valuable it is that we are both homes. Jon works from home and I do dogs full time. There would be no way we could do this if we were not both home. For that, we are incredibly thankful.
