Hidden Gems: Meet Karen Taylor of Taylor Legal Nurse Consulting

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Taylor.

Hi Karen, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I began in healthcare in the early 1990’s as a Registered Respiratory Therapist. In 2005, I decided to change careers, and I went to nursing school. By January 2008, I finished nursing school and started working in the Medical ICU (Intensive Care Unit) as a Critical Care Registered Nurse. I worked in the ICU until November 2019, when I injured my shoulder at work, requiring surgery. I realized I could not go back to that level of physical responsibility in the ICU and took an educational course in Legal Nurse Consulting. By the end of 2019, I opened my own business (Taylor Legal Nurse Consulting) and began working for attorneys on cases involving health, illness, and injuries. When asked what I do, I tell people, “I make sense out of medical records for attorneys and their team by writing analysis reports and developing medical chronologies.”

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, Legal Nurse Consulting is a marathon, not a sprint. I started my business right before everything shut down due to Covid-19. The normal means of marketing, such as physically visiting attorney’s offices, was off limits. I had to do a lot of networking and alternative forms of marketing to gain traction and get my first client.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I’m a Registered Nurse with over 18 years of clinical experience in adult Intensive Care. (With my Respiratory Therapy background, I’ve been in healthcare for a total of 34 years.)

I use my knowledge and experience to interpret medical records and assist attorneys in building their cases. I work on any case that involves health, illness or injury. I primarily work on Medical Malpractice and Personal Injury cases, although I’ve also gotten the opportunity to work on cases involving Worker’s Compensation, Product Liability, Mass Torts, and Family Law.

My Legal Nurse Consulting (LNC) services include early case evaluation to help the attorney determine if they should move forward, medical record organization, medical chronologies, summary and analysis reports, and medical expert location.

My nursing background is (obviously) crucial for this type of work, but I believe my Respiratory Therapy background sets me apart. I have a broad range of clinical background and can bring all of that to the table when I review medical records.

I’m most proud of the fact that I have many return attorney-clients. That, in itself, tells me I provide a quality work product. I have open communication as I move through a case, alerting my client to “red flags” or areas of concern that arise. I always strive to beat case deadlines and have successfully done so on every case I’ve worked on thus far.

What are your plans for the future?
I’m looking forward to building my client list here in North Carolina. I’m able to work with attorneys from across the country, but I’d like to build strong relationships here at home. I like the idea of being able to meet my clients face-to-face and discussing their needs.
