Hidden Gems: Meet Karmen Bulmer of Six Dozen Consulting

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karmen Bulmer

Hi Karmen, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, my family’s involvement in community events sparked a lifelong passion for connecting with others and being part of something bigger. With over 15 years of experience in hospitality and community engagement, I’ve opened and managed multiple locations for a local brewery, overseeing everything from hiring to maintaining brand integrity. This journey led me to launch Six Dozen Consulting, where I now help businesses thrive by enhancing their branding, operations, and community involvement.

Throughout my career, I’ve partnered with various businesses—particularly in the hospitality industry—to support ethical practices and creative endeavors. Feeling confined to working with just one company, I founded Six Dozen to broaden my impact and collaborate with more businesses. My philosophy is rooted in authenticity, finding joy in connecting people and ideas, whether through organizing events or working with nonprofits.

By embracing complexity and multiple perspectives, I provide hands-on solutions that help businesses navigate challenges, stay competitive, and ultimately reach their full potential.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but honestly, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. The challenges I’ve faced have shaped who I am today. Staying true to myself—my ethics and perspective—has always been important to me. I never had a clear career in mind growing up; instead, I just wanted to work for a company I could be proud of, one that shared my values. I’ve found that a few times along the way, but when I didn’t, the hardest part was knowing when to walk away.

If I can’t believe in a company’s ethos, it’s hard for me to succeed because I pour so much of myself into what I do. When it’s not the right fit, I struggle to believe in the tasks I’m asked to achieve. Staying true to yourself is tough in today’s world, but when the time came, I doubled down on that belief. Now, I’ve turned that struggle into something positive by starting my own company. It’s a dream come true to be able to selectively support businesses that align with my values and help them along their way.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
In mid-2024, I launched Six Dozen Consulting with the goal of making a broader impact on my community and those around me by leveraging my unique skills in operations and marketing. I’ve worn many hats across different industries—from being an owner-operator of a local brewery to a loan specialist, to leading a sales team as a manager, and even pouring beers behind the bar. No matter the role, there’s been a common thread: effectively communicating with people, adapting to various management styles, and marketing myself to connect within the community. In every position, I’ve treated others’ businesses with the same dedication and care as if they were my own, always looking for ways to fill gaps and empower those around me.

After a while, though, I realized I wanted to do more than support just one company—I wanted to collaborate with many. That’s how Six Dozen Consulting came to life. What sets me apart is my ethos. I take a genuine, hands-on approach to community collaboration and am passionate about supporting ethical businesses. Helping companies become more authentic and effective in their work is what drives me.

Over the years, I’ve seen how businesses often struggle with decision-making, whether it’s about employee management, marketing strategies, or operational flow. My approach, inspired by the Six Dozen philosophy, is to embrace complexity and find innovative solutions that consider multiple perspectives. Whether it’s organizing 5Ks, planning block parties, or collaborating with nonprofits, I love connecting the dots and creating meaningful contributions through collaboration and accountability.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Self-doubt is a real stinger. It can loom in the background until you decide to make the leap, and even then, it’s an omnipresent character nonetheless. Not being afraid to lean on your support system is key when you are just starting out. Become a sponge to soak up all the knowledge, reach out to your local organizations, possibly at local colleges who can help support entrepreneurs like yourself. It’s okay to not know it all, nobody does. What’s not okay is not asking for help. The sooner you realize it’s okay to ask a question, the further you will get, I promise.
