Hidden Gems: Meet Katrina Sanders of K&H Scrub Shop

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katrina Sanders.

Katrina Sanders

Hi Katrina, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m a Southern girl. I was born and raised in a small, rural town called Orangeburg, South Carolina, and Charlotte, North Carolina has been my home for the last 21 years. Even as a child, I had a strong desire to care for and help people in their time of need.

For me, there was no moment of divine intervention.

No following the footsteps of an admired parent or relative, as I was a first-generation college student.

Rather, there was a gradual realization that nursing is an ideal career for someone with a heart as big as mine.

And so, I became a nurse at 20 and have remained a nurse for 23 years.

For me, nursing has been the most rewarding career and the only career I can consider my calling.

Nursing is not my only calling. I am the proud mother of four daughters ages 21, 15, and 11-year-old twins.

They are the reason I founded K&H Scrub Shop.

My story is different from most entrepreneurs: I never wanted to be one. I wasn’t born with the entrepreneur gene.

Yet I have four girls watching and feel compelled to lead by example so they see you can do anything with hard work and determination.

So, they see you can create financial freedom by serving a cause you are passionate about.

So, they see the legacy I have created in service of my dreams and choose to chase their own.

Launching K&H has been one of the best decisions I ever made because in founding K&H, I found another way to help others.

And that is what I and my company are all about.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey I’ve been on hasn’t necessarily been a smooth path, but more like a journey that twists and turns. Starting my own business was like stepping onto a rollercoaster I had never seen before. There were highs and lows I never expected. Finding suppliers and navigating the manufacturing world – it was like learning a new language while singing a song in front of a crowd, both thrilling and nerve-wracking.

In this tough market, standing out was like hitting that high note in a soulful song – challenging, but oh so rewarding when you get it right. It wasn’t just about selling a product; it was about creating a connection, understanding what my fellow nurses and customers needed, and providing that with all my heart.

Building that trust with medical professionals, making sure they knew my scrubs weren’t just fabric but a piece of my dream and dedication. And the digital side of things – like creating a vibrant online presence, that’s been a continuous journey of learning and adapting.

Listening to customer feedback, tweaking, and improving – it’s like fine-tuning a melody until it resonates just right. And let’s not forget the power of support – my family, my friends, they’ve been my choir, my backing vocals, giving me strength and harmony.

So, smooth? Far from it. But each struggle, each challenge, has been a note in the beautiful song of this journey. Equal parts scary, exciting, and empowering. And you know what? I wouldn’t change a single thing about this journey. It’s made me who I am, and I’m just getting warmed up!

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
K&H Scrub Shop isn’t just a name; it represents a partnership – both mine and my husband’s initials. It’s a symbol of the love and commitment we put into our business. As a nurse-owned online store, we specialize in high-quality, comfortable, and fashionable scrubs for healthcare professionals. What sets us apart? Every piece we offer is nurse-vetted, ensuring you get the best in comfort and functionality.

We’re not just about selling scrubs; we personalize them. Our embroidery services transform each uniform into a unique statement of style and professional pride. It’s all about making your scrubs a reflection of you with the quality and care that only a nurse’s touch can provide.

What am I most proud of? The trust and reliability that K&H Scrub Shop stands for. When you choose K&H, you’re not just buying a uniform; you’re investing in a business that’s crafted with love, expertise, and an unwavering commitment to quality. That’s the K&H promise.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I have one of the best business coaches in the scrub industry, Tina M. Payne, CEO of Tina M. Payne Consulting. I’ve dived headfirst into industry events, professional groups, and online forums with fellow entrepreneurs in the scrub business. But it’s not just about showing up; it’s about engaging, being genuinely interested in what others have to say. When I meet experienced professionals, I don’t shy away from asking for advice. Remember, networking is give and take. I make it a point to offer help to others, too – it’s about building relationships, not just contacts.

Building a diverse network has been key. It’s brought me different perspectives, fresh ideas, and opportunities I might not have found otherwise. So, my advice? Be curious, be helpful, and stay connected.
