Hidden Gems: Meet Keama Eason of Eason Family Independent Home

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keama Eason.

Keama Eason

Hi Keama, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I began my career in retail as a teenager but quickly realized that industry was not for me so within a few years, I shifted my interest to health care. I began my career as a certified nursing assistant (CNA) in 2003, I became a registered nurse (RN) in 2009, received my bachelor’s in nursing (BSN) in 2013, and then went back for my master’s degree in healthcare administration (MHA) and graduated in 2017. I’ve always had the gift for caring for others, so my natural talents led me in my career. The experiences of leading teams and managing committees led me to consider opening my own business and supporting the community by offering services to those who may not otherwise find housing and this service is an independent home with services. Eason Family Independent Home, LLC is a multi-unit assisted residence for up to 6 full-time residents, offering quality independent living. We serve diverse population of individuals with independent housing needs. The types of populations we serve include individuals with developmental and physical disabilities along with emotional and mental disorders.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to entrepreneurship has not been easy. When I entered even the thought of opening a business, I knew it would be a rollercoaster, but I never expected some of the struggles I have encountered both financially and emotionally. The first struggle I encountered was opening not knowing that 2020 was going to be the year of Covid, this pandemic that ultimately led to a public health emergency delayed the opening of my independent home with services by 2 years. The constant setbacks were due to supply chain issues, limited access to clients, and limited access to the state departments that place MUAs on the registry. Another struggle that I have encountered is that not everyone wants assistance. I have received referrals for clients from hospitals, Department of Social Services, community organizations, and from those looking for placement from the registry but until the client wants to transition from their current situations to the independent home setting, no one can want it for them. They must want it for themselves. This has been the hardest struggle for me.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about Eason Family Independent Home, LLC?
Eason Family Independent Home, LLC is a multi-unit assisted residence for up to 6 full-time residents, offering quality independent living. We serve diverse population of individuals with independent housing needs. The types of populations we serve include individuals with developmental and physical disabilities along with emotional and mental disorders. As a Registered Nurse with experience working with patients over the years in both the hospital and long-term care has shown they all have similar, if not the same care needs. Including but not limited to being treated with dignity, actively engaged in social interaction, active participants in their care, and the expectation to be cared for by an interdisciplinary team who collaborate to meet goals of care. Even though it is unfortunate, most care facilities operate with the facility being first and then provide care. Based on our residence list of needs, we put the resident first.

I believe we create our own luck in our life and in business. I believe if you are in the right place at the right time and move accordingly positive things will happen for you and your business. I have created my own luck by remaining educated about events going on in the community and world around me. Preparation is the next in creating luck. Preparation gives you the opportunity to look at all possible outcomes so when the unknown happens you are equipped to handle the situation and not be blindsided. The last step in creating luck is being open to new ideas. Being open to new ideas help to keep your business open to new opportunities.
