Hidden Gems: Meet Mac McCrodden of Lazy Eye Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mac McCrodden.

Hi Mac, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have been in love with vintage clothing since I was a kid going through antique malls with my Mom. I spent 10 years in New York City as a fashion designer but moved back home to Raleigh to be closer to family. I happened on an antique mall in Kinston a few years ago, they had just opened and were looking for vendors. I jumped at the chance to start selling vintage clothing and accessories there. About six months later, a booth opened up for me at Cheshire Cat in the Village District. I started with a small booth there and have been able to move into two larger spaces, one upstairs and one in the basement.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has been relatively smooth, although there are parts of small business operations that are out of my comfort zone. Social media and taxes give me anxiety! But doing what I love and watching my business grow makes the areas I am less comfortable seem less daunting. And it gets easier with repetition!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Lazy Eye Studio?
I have a resale business where I curate vintage clothing and accessories for fashion lovers who want unique and sustainable pieces. I believe in the power of self expression through style, it allows you to decide how you want to present yourself to the outside world. And it can change how you feel about yourself. Trends are changing so quickly with social media, but these trends usually have roots in bygone eras. By purchasing a vintage piece you can play with new trends while buying quality. These pieces have been around for
40, 50, 60 plus years! Vintage also allows you to buck the trend by finding a piece no one else will have. I’m most proud seeing the confidence and joy my pieces or personal styling services bring to others. I aim to keep pieces budget friendly and accessible to everyone. In addition to having two booths at Cheshire Cat, I offer personal styling and closet clean outs for those looking to revamp or who want to make dressing less stressful and more fun!

How do you think about happiness?
Spending time with my husband and our puppy. Travel and new places. Pasta and good food. Finding a rare piece of clothing that has been overlooked or discarded and bringing it new life. Building lasting friendships with people I get to meet along the way.
