Hidden Gems: Meet Morgan A. Laster of Shop Cultured

Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan A. Laster.

Hi Morgan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I am a third-generation HBCU graduate. I am a wife and a mother to two amazing children. Shortly after having my second child, I breathed life into a project that later turned into my company- Shop Cultured. I had the opportunity to draw from my life experiences to curate some dope relatable products.

Growing up, I would only wear T-shirts- no matter the occasion! I’ve always had an affinity for t-shirts, so transitioning from customer to designer was a challenging, yet comfortable, transition for me. I began making shirts because I found it increasingly difficult to find shirts that resonated with me.

Starting out, I would make shirts just for me. I would make items for family and friends too, here and there, but mostly I created items for myself. Somewhere between all that, we created awareness and the brand caught on.

I had the opportunity to be included in various small business platforms in the area such as pop-up shops, events, and retail locations such as The Lounge (formerly) and Black Friday Market (currently), and it helped me connect with even more people in different settings.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It’s been smooth – in pockets. A lot of wins and some learning opportunities along the way.

One of the struggles that I face is learning how to balance everything. Managing my time between my family, a full-time career, and owning, operating, and expanding a full-time business is challenging. I don’t always get the combination right, it’s a lot of trial and error. I have learned that everything doesn’t have to get done today, sleep is non-negotiable, and to invest in a good air fryer.

Another struggle is learning how to trust the process and me. I overthink a lot – it’s the Virgo in me. It usually works out, but sometimes I can be stuck for days over the simplest details. Nine times out of ten, I usually go with my first choice after it’s all said and done.

Grace.

As you know, we’re big fans of Shop Cultured. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Dope, relatable, tees, and accessories. The quality of my items is honestly top tier- humble brag, but actual facts. The entire production process is a very intimate experience- all of the designs are created by me, everything is handmade and locally sourced.

I started my company in a spare bedroom in my house, and now I have customers that can shop with me from anywhere in the world, 24/7 online or here locally in Black Friday Market located in downtown Raleigh.

Shop Cultured is not the average t-shirt company. From the quality, the messaging, product offering, and vibes the brand convey. It is a representation of what a cross-section of the Culture looks and feels like.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I usually don’t leave a lot to chance. However, I have been fortunate in that I have had the opportunity to come into contact with people who have been able to help me elevate my brand. I believe that some of the opportunities may not have presented themselves had I not put in the work as well.
