Today we’d like to introduce you to Naomi And Natalie Gingerich.
Hi Naomi and Natalie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
We are a mother-and-daughter baking company based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, using seasonally-inspired heirloom recipes to create decadent desserts. We specialize in our signature Amish Cinnamon Rolls made from a heritage recipe, hand-rolled in small batches and covered in a boiled brown sugar frosting. We also feature cakes and pies reminiscent of our grandmother’s table, with modernized twists influenced by European food trends. Everything in our kitchen is made from scratch, using organic North Carolina-milled flour.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of the challenges we faced was when we were preparing to move to a storefront which had opened up for us. It was in the middle of COVID, in 2020, and banks were not eager to loan money to a food business, So instead, we did a kickstarter to raise $50,000 to purchase some ovens, tables and chairs, and espresso equipment. It took a lot of courage but it worked, and in the end we raised $55,000 and opened our current storefront in December, 2020.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Louie and Honey’s Kitchen?
In 2017, Naomi started a bakery with her oldest daughter, Natalie. With $3000 and the Kitchen Aid mixer Naomi recieved from her mother on her 30th birthday, they rented a basement kitchen at Beta Verde outside Winston-Salem where they baked their heritage recipes. Every Saturday, they sold their baked goods at Cobblestone Farmer’s Market and in various other pop-ups throughout the city.
Three and a half years and over 500 pop-ups later, they opened their bakery café in West End on December 4, 2020, carrying on the baking traditions passed down through many generations of their heritage. Today, their kitchen has doubled in size to accommodate growth and production. They have also added a market space with additional seating in the lower level of the café.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
Naomi and her husband, Fred, raised their kids on the family farm where Naomi was born. For Natalie, this meant sharing some of the best memories of her childhood growing up on the same farm as her mother. The rolling hills of Amish country, the peaceful farms and pastures filled with horses and sheep are a common thread of their time in Ohio.
