Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Fortune.
Hi Nicole, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I was a kid, I loved making pillow forts. As preteen I used them as an escape and a place for me to process my feelings. I started therapy in college and learned that I had been living with depression throughout my adolescence. My experience in therapy inspired me to go to grad school to become a therapist myself. After receiving my MSW and MPH, I decided it would be fun to revisit the idea of pillow forts and meet other therapists by starting the Pillow Fort Sessions Podcast. After a two year hiatus during covid and receiving my LCSW I decided to try making the fort an actual practice. Pillow Fort Sessions Therapy PLLC has been providing therapy for Raleigh for the past 2.5 years and is the one and only pillow fort themed therapy office for adults in North Carolina.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Starting the practice has definitely not been easy. I first struggled with the confidence to even become a therapist and, even scarier, an entrepreneur. It took a lot of support and motivation from family and friends to believe I could do it. Then there was the complicated process of getting licensed and starting a business. There were a lot of unknowns, setbacks and paperwork that made it a daunting task causing both emotional and financial struggles. It taught me tenacity and patience and how to ask for help.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Pillow Fort Sessions Therapy is a pillow fort themed office for adults that provides licensed mental health therapy to adults. The calming, nostalgic and childlike space is meant to help us grownups reconnect with our inner child. As the owner and therapist I specialize in trauma therapy as well as teaching people the importance of personal spaces. I think what sets me apart is the coziness. I wanted my therapy office to feel like anything but a clinical sterile space. I’m most proud of the fact that people get that as soon as they see our logo- the colors and the motto immediately disarms people and gets them curious about therapy. I want people to know that my intern and I are here to help folks reconnect with themselves at the office and at their homes by teaching them how to make their own spaces. Whether they want 1:1 therapy, training or just some fun stickers we want to provide a new perception of therapy. We are also a safe and inclusive place, open to working with anyone on just about any subject ages 16-100.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Well I think it’s not surprising that my favorite childhood memory is making pillow forts, but I actually have a favorite pillow fort! When I was a kid my brother and I used to hang out underneath the bed of our old 90’s pull-out sofa. While we watched Saturday morning cartoons and animal planet I would organize all of my library books like a super nerd.
