My journey began deep in the heart of Tuscarora lands, where I felt a profound connection to the natural world around me. One day, while exploring the forest, I encountered a plant that stood apart from the rest. I cleared my mind and allowed myself to become one with the forest, feeling the rhythm of the wind, the pulse of the earth, and the quiet strength of the trees. And then, in the stillness, something extraordinary happened

The plant spoke to me—not in words, but in a language of energy and emotion, a language that bypassed the mind and spoke directly to the soul. It revealed to me the intricate network that connected all living things, how the roots beneath the earth intertwined like veins, carrying not just water and nutrients, but knowledge—ancient, sacred knowledge.

It showed me visions of the past, of ancient healers who had once walked the earth, using the power of plants to heal and protect their people. I saw how they listened to the plants, understanding that each one had a spirit, a purpose, and a story to tell. These healers knew that the key to healing was not just in the physical properties of the plants, but in the spiritual connection between the healer, the plant, and the one being healed.

The plant then shared its own secret with me, a secret that had been passed down through the ages. It taught me how to listen—not just with my ears, but with my heart. Driven by this revelation, I devoted myself to studying herbal medicine and natural healing practices. My quest for knowledge led me to pursue a PhD as a naturopathic doctor, integrating the wisdom I had received from that extraordinary plant into my practice.

Determined to share what I had learned, I founded an online herbal apothecary, which I have the moniker “farmacy.” This virtual space became a haven for those seeking guidance and healing. Through my farmacy, I offered personalized consultations, plant medicines, herbal supplements, astrological services, Irish sea moss, and healing teas. My goal was to help others remember their connection to themselves, each other, and nature all around them through natural remedies so that they can achieve complete healing of the mind, body, and spirit. This apothecary would be named Bear Naked Herbals.

Yet, my journey did not stop there. In 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, I traveled to Pucallpa, Peru to study medicinal plants with the Shipibo tribe. I didn’t know that it would be the start of my shamanhood and ethnobotany as a pastime.

This new path allowed me to blend the wisdom of my indigenous ancestors and my technical knowledge as a naturopath with ancient shamanic traditions of the Shipibo, creating a unique approach that honored both my heritage and modern science. The shamanic practices deepened my understanding of healing and expanded my ability to guide others.

Today, I continue to bridge the gap between ancient wisdom and contemporary holistic health. Bear Naked Herbals stands as a testament to my commitment to healing and education, combining the insights of both traditional and modern practices. Through my work, I strive to inspire and support others on their own journeys toward health and harmony, guided by the timeless wisdom that first spoke to me in the heart of the forest.

Throughout my journey, I faced several challenges that tested my resolve and shaped my path.

Early on, my deep connection with the plant world often set me apart from those around me. I felt isolated as I pursued knowledge and practices that were unfamiliar to many. Doubt crept in, both from within and from others who questioned the validity of my unconventional path.

As I delved into herbal medicine and naturopathy, integrating traditional knowledge with modern science proved challenging. Mastering the complexities of plant properties, preparation methods, and their effects required years of study and practical experience. Balancing this with the demands of establishing Bear Naked Herbals was a constant struggle.

Setting up an online herbal apothecary involved significant financial investment and logistical planning. I had to navigate the complexities of sourcing high-quality herbs from individuals with a similar mindset that I have using sustainable indigenous practices, managing inventory, and ensuring compliance with regulations, all while building a client base from scratch.

The shamanic journey introduced me to profound emotional and spiritual challenges. The process of connecting deeply with spiritual realms and confronting personal, familial, and collective wounds required immense courage and introspection during my Dark Night of the Soul. Through shadow work, under the guidance of the most incredible, amazing, talented, intelligent, and beautiful death doula and shadow work guide, Dez Mai, I was able to know myself on a much deeper level with more focus, intensity, drive, and passion to do the work I have been called to do.

As my Bear Naked Herbals grew, I faced the challenge of staying true to the holistic principles I valued while also addressing the practical aspects of running a business. Balancing authenticity with the pressures of growth and commercialization was a continual struggle.

Despite these difficulties, each challenge strengthened my resolve and deepened my understanding. They helped me grow not only as a healer but also as a person committed to bridging ancient wisdom with modern health practices.
