Hidden Gems: Meet Phillip Crumb of Crumb Construction

Today we’d like to introduce you to Phillip Crumb.

Hi phillip, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started Crumb Construction, LLC, doing business as Phil Crumb Trucking, LLC, in 2015 with a single dump truck and a strong belief that consistent work and integrity would open doors. In the early days, I focused on subcontract hauling, building relationships with major contractors across eastern North Carolina and steadily growing my reputation through reliability and performance.
My first major breakthrough came when I secured a contract with Balfour Beatty in Fayetteville, North Carolina. That opportunity marked a turning point for my business. To meet the demands of the project, I hired and managed approximately 15 to 20 subcontractors, gaining valuable experience in scaling operations and leading larger teams. When that project concluded, I continued to build momentum by partnering with Flatiron Corporation on a highway widening project in Dunn, North Carolina—a project that remains active today and is expected to be completed in late 2027.

In 2019, I took another critical step forward by earning my Heavy Highway Contractor License from the North Carolina General Contractors Licensing Board. This milestone allowed me to transition from subcontractor work into serving as a prime contractor on smaller construction projects. Each phase of growth—from one truck to managing large-scale operations—has been driven by a willingness to learn, taking calculated risks, and continually raising the standard of my work.

My journey is proof that steady progress, strong partnerships, and persistence can turn a small beginning into long-term opportunity.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a completely smooth road. Like most growing businesses, I faced several challenges that required real problem-solving in order to move forward. One of the most significant hurdles was managing cash flow. Early on, I realized that waiting on net-30 payments could slow momentum, so I began negotiating payment terms of net-14 or sooner. That shift allowed receivables to cycle faster and gave the business more financial stability.

Another ongoing challenge was building a reliable and competent team. As a small contractor, minimizing risk is critical—every dollar saved or misstep avoided has a direct impact on sustainability. Investing in the right people helped reduce costly errors and provided a stronger foundation to weather seasonal fluctuations and project slowdowns.

These challenges ultimately became lessons that strengthened the business, reinforcing the importance of adaptability, discipline, and making proactive decisions before problems become setbacks.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

That same level of leadership carries through every Crumb Construction project.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Finding the right mentor or building a strong network starts with being intentional. Look for someone within your industry who has experience and insight aligned with your goals. A mentor doesn’t have to be someone far removed from your day-to-day work—it can be someone who understands your challenges and has already navigated the path you’re on.

Most importantly, don’t be afraid to reach out. Be clear about your interests, ask thoughtful questions, and show genuine curiosity about their journey. Many people are willing to share knowledge if they see commitment and initiative. Strong professional relationships are built over time, and often they begin with a simple conversation.
