Today we’d like to introduce you to Yazmin Coleman.
Hi Yazmin; thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey started in 2007 when I became a teenage mother at the age of 16 years old. From that day forward, I put a lot of focus and intent into everything I did. I graduated from Apex High School a year earlier, making me part of the Cougars Graduating class of 2008. I decided to go to Wake Tech for Business Administration but was not passionate about it and decided to go into the work field. I have worked in various industries and for various companies (Dunkin Donuts, Subway, Kangaroo, HomeGoods, Staffing Agency, and the dental field). After working in the dental field and making a good salary at a young age, I decided I wanted more for myself and my children. By age 21, I had two sons and was filing for divorce. I attended North Carolina Central University to pursue a degree in Nursing. However, God had another plan for me, leading me to complete my Bachelor of Social Work. My professors at NCCU saw something in me I did not and encouraged me to apply for graduate school. With their support and my hard work ethic, I secured an HRSA grant and was accepted into the Advanced Standing Program at the University of North Carolina of Greensboro and North Carolina A&T. I completed my Master of Social Work in 10 months. I was able to network and create long-lasting professional relationships that have positioned me where I am today. I have been a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the behavioral health field since 2017. I have successfully worked in inpatient settings such as Holly Hill, higher level of care serving as an Assertive Community Treatment Team Lead, working with youth as a school-based therapist, and doing outpatient therapy for adolescents and families. I hold 5 active licenses in 4 states and I am pursuing my 6th license. I serve as a Clinical Supervisor for an agency based in Ohio and a Clinical Supervisor for provisionally licensed clinicians in the state of North Carolina. I also continue to work in the field as a Team Lead for a Community Support Team in Raleigh. I have also successfully created two businesses and form part of the Williams Enterprise. Dr. Reba Royster and I have created HeadStrong Wellness Inc to effectively educate young athletes on mental health and coping with their stressors. We offer sports clinics, individual therapy, and group therapy as well. HeadStrong Wellness also provides clinical supervision for social workers and counselors and will offer continuing education credits in the near future. Families of Enrichment PLLC is my business. I offer clinical supervision for provisionally licensed Social Workers and will establish respite care for young children and adolescents with acute mental and behavioral health disabilities in the near future. My journey has not been easy, but it has been gratifying and has opened several opportunities for me. Being in the behavioral health field is stressful and time-consuming, but it is also rewarding to be a blessing and help others overcome their fears and trauma. I also have a great support system that understands my workload and supports my dreams and visions. There are several plans for the future, this is not the end. This is just the beginning!
Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
My journey could have been smoother; there were various obstacles I had to overcome as a young mother and career-wise as well. As a Latina, I was expected to work only with the Latinx population once I received my license. I worked for an agency as a contracted therapist in Orange County and Wake County and enjoyed working with all my Latinx families. Still, it was difficult for me to support them as I did not have the same life experiences. During my academic years, my professors always expressed that a therapeutic relationship is like any other; it is professional, and there are boundaries between therapist and client. However, for a client to feel safe and supported, there has to be some relatability and connection. It was not easy juggling school and being a single mother of two. I traveled daily from Apex to Greensboro for graduate school and was gone most of the day. My parents were great support and helped take my children to school and care for them during my absence. I did not stay on campus. I commuted daily to be home with my children.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next, you can tell us more about your business.

What does success mean to you?
Success is being emotionally, mentally, physically, and financially stable. Having a good work-to-life balance is important to be successful. Money is important, and don’t get me wrong, I love to have money to spend on things I love and always have a cushion to fall on; however, money has never impressed me, and it is not a requirement for me to feel I have achieved something or to feel successful. The weight my name carries and the respect I earn is more important for me to feel successful and accomplished.
